Turbo-ing D15b7, What should be done to prep?
I'm turboing my D15b7 with a custom turbo setup..wanting to run at about 5 or 6 psi, with basic fuel management...B&M 255 Lph fuel pump, and Vortech FMU, and starion FMIC. I have ENOUGH kms on the car...208 000 kms! What should i do to the engine to prep it before putting the turbo on? Don't laugh at me either.
first things first....get a different engine...its not worth it to prep that engine for turbo to boost 5-6lbs. and i dont think the results would be that satisfying either...just my .02
Ok let me start by saying that you have a sohc motor, yours a D15B7, mine A D16Z6 block with Y8 Head. Although wanting to turbo your motor you probably have it in the back of your mind that your going to get a dohc at some point.
I would say the first thing you want to run boost is the fuel pump. That intank walbro just won't cut it. Keep your intank and get a walbro inline ( I paid 150 canadian new). That is if I 'm assuming your going with the fmu type (dinasor - I got it I should know) type system. After that there is no real preping.
The tranny thats with that motor is real laggy, and you'll notice it on that motor. IF you had a sohc vtec type tranny you would feel more of a difference. I'll tell you right now 5-6psi won't feel like much, but you will feel it. If you make or buy a mbc you will notice a big difference in spool up time for the sohc motor. Soon you'll try 8, 9 and 10 psi. Then you'll be prepared to buy another motor or leave the honda scene. Either way you'll be come more knowledgable in the world of force induction. But if you continue on the honda trip your newly found knowledge will give you the edge into the dohc power. Thats my plan.
I'll push the sohc till its not financially sensible to keep doing it...................................then its dohc with a sick custom turbo kit with stand alone injectors and all those goodies.
Good luck dude (BTW I'm from canada also, eastern, it ain't easy getting swaps around here).

If you have the cash get ride of the motor. A B18C or B16 swap alone in your car will prob be faster than a turbo on your motor. But if cash is strapped and you access to a Junk Yard or DSM type turbo kit go for it.
Keep your motor and get a second SOHC engine and build it. It can be done much cheaper then building a DOHC engine. Also clutches, Manifolds, pistons, and rods are cheaper. You can make some really good power with a SOHC engine for less $ then a DOHC.
You could pickup a d16z6 for around 400-550 and dropit in... Im hitting low 13's on a stock d16z6 in a CRX. All I have is injectors, fuel pump, and fmu...
It has crower rods, srp pistons, blockgaurd, its bored, Drag gen 3 kit for 1.6VTEC modified and bunch of bolt on crap like clutch, ignition, boost controller, you get the pic.
steve(boostedD15B7) its 1 bar time dogg. air fuel ratio is good. letz line em up!!
