ATTN: Turbo Experts, Need Advice
I am soon going to be putting on my drag III turbo kit on my stock 2001 type r. my question is, i am going to be running a intank walbro 255 high flow pump, instead of the inline and FMU. When i install the kit, will i be okay to drive to the muffler shop and dyno without the fmu and only walbor intank fuel pump? i will not be driving hard, just want to know if i will be getting enough fuel with stock injectors and intake fuel pump? Please advise. Thank You very much.

Why dont you go to the muffler shop first, .... then put the turbo kit on w/ the FMU,.... then go to the dyno?
The whole point of the FMU is to provide some sort of fuel management in case you go into boost. Otherwise you'll have boost w/ no extra fuel, which is... not so great

Where in hell is everyone getting the idea that the FMU is such a horrible thing for a turbo car to start off with? As long as it is a rising rate regulator, there should be nothing wrong untill he decides (IF he decides) to upgrade everything to get more power, such as Hondata, Power FC, injectors, etc. I've had many people run on the FMU for YEARS, trouble free, but they also weren't going for the biggest HP in the world to start off...
If he wants more power later, he can always upgrade and save the funds to do it right. Either way. He needs to go to the muffler shop FIRST. Then boost it..

okay, i dont think you guys are getting the question. i already have a hondata, i already have 440 injectors, but i want to put that in at the dyno. so my quesiton is, can i drive the car without the FMU and only stock injectors and walbor high flow 255 fuel pump for a short period of time?

if the distance from where you are getting it tuned and your home isn't very far you shold be -k-. but don't boost the car till you get tuned and don't tune the car till you have everything you want the car to have on the car.

it will be like running a stock motor,BUT DO NOT GO INTO BOOST.you will not like the out come.

Wow, of course just dont boost. If your not bossted you dont need the extra fuel. Its only when you boost will you have a problem, so go ahead drive yourself to the dyno shop just keep the throttle under 15% or so.

Why not just put the put the kit on, and have it towed to the shop, so its not an issue? People drive halfway across the country to be tuned by professionals.
It is an R after all ... why even risk it. I'm sure you'd be fine if you baby it to the shop, but its just something to think about.

A few side comments on the fuel system. The injectors are too small, and they will most likely be your bottleneck. Also, the 255 walbro is serious overkill unless you like unwanted fuel pressure! I would try to track down a 190 instead, or a AFPR to add to your setup.

Not for nothing, but I think that a 255lph with an RRR and those injectors as a whole will be more fuel than you'll ever need. As a tuner, my disdain with RRR's is that it makes it much harder to calculate fuel flow for fuel tables without busting out a calculator and plugging in the result into the table. Then again, this is assuming that you'll be getting it tuned via an EMS like Uberdata which is 100% free and equatable to Hondata. If you're just going to tune from the FMU (which is an RRR) then don't worry about it. The FMU will give fuel/psi no matter what you do, so your fuel pressure and therefore fuel delivery will be covered.
On the other hand, if you decide to go with an EMS, then toss the RRR for something that's just a 1:1 rather than the FMU's 12:1. The vital difference is that the RRR is designed for a system where the stock fuel tables do not accomidate boost and/or the ECU has no idea that the manifold is seeing boost at all. An EMS will be able to provide more fuel via greater duty cycle to the injectors as it seas boost go up and still be able to control timing

That all depends on the fuel pressure, but 440's will support about 100more WHP than that.
