Default Painting headlight question? Re-seal with Silicon or put back in oven?

Im about to paint my headlight housing either flat black or gunmetal. I have a few questions.

- How many minutes? Iv'e heard anywhere from 8 minutes to 12 minutes at 200 degrees...

- Re-sealing? Put back in oven or use silicon???

- What do you think...Gunmetal or black?

- I've also read you have to take your bumper off, is this true?

thanks...

1. I did 10min at 200 deg. I really dont think it matters that much

2. I used clear silicon then used thick rubber bands to hold it together, then just let it dry, no oven time for me.

3. Either are good I went with a gunmetal color it looks nice about 5 coats.

4. Yes, take the bumper off its not hard and it makes it 10x easier

Happy baking

a blow dryer also works well. i've done it on my old ride and the seal was very good using silicone and the seal left over on the light. if i was to do it again, i would not paint the chrome inside because it will fade with the sun after a while. it's not hard to do though.

i didn't paint the chrome, just the orange marker and it faded within a year. i just wouldn't paint the chrome housing if i were to break it open again. it looks good though.

you really don't need to remove the bumper, I didn't and it wasn't very difficult to do...

EDIT: I'm refering to a 5th gen, I can't speak for newer models

my brother's lights look exactly like that. you dont want to paint where the turn signal is because the lights need to reflect and also i heard it gets hot and the paint will crack

the bumper's very easy to remove. start with all the black plastic clips when you open the hood. then the bottom 12mm bolts (3 of them), and last the two screws under the wheel wells (1 each). then pull the bumper off.

Congrats, thinking about doing the same thing, 99-00 civic owners have it soooo shitty, all black housings from anywhere are on back order. Can't wait to see how it turned out.
