I am very new to painting, basicly learning from a friend who has some experiance. we just did my 91 hatch, we used a slight haze of primer from a can. I bought the materals, 2qt shopline grand prix white (s2000) and a gallon of no name "high gloss" clear. it took us 5 coats of base for coverage and used 3 nice coats of clear. Does this sound like an effective method, basicly a scuff and shoot job. and honestly i spent about $140-150. I am painting my EK this spring, any advice on anything. Planning on doing more prep on the EK any good advice on the prep or materials. Please dont say i should buy high dollor materials I have a small budget and have bills and ****! but advice is greatly apprieciated. I do plan on useing a shopline base and the same no name clear, sorry i do forget the name of it but it is very cheap, but i think it came out nice. Other than dust kicked up in the garage i think the paint job can be wet sanded and buffed out to a very nice finish. I am happy with the finish but is there any options to the base and clear coat in the shopline price range?

Yes, I am doing my EK hatch this spring, my 91 is kinda a DD and i only had a day in the shop we did it all in 17 hours from the time we pulled it in til we where 100% done. so i will take more time on the ek going to remove all the trim and lights. also removing the bumpers. Also I will post the clear brand I used when I find the can.

we had it about 80 degrees in the garage so once the first coat of base was on it was dry within a few min. the base dries very fast. we took a short break like 20 min then hit it with the clear. The guide we used with the clear was when it gets tacky to the touch on the taped off areas it was ready for the next coat. it normally takes longer between coats but for us by the time we shot the first coat of clear it was ready to shoot the next. It might have been the clear we used or the temp of the room, but as long as it is kinda tacky to the touch it should be fine for the next coat.

I am not sure on the gun price it was my friends I think it is a basic gun from the paint supply store not too expensive. I will find out for sure and get back to you. You will have to share your DIY project. Do you have a thread? and yes I need to lower it asap but not til this winter is over for good. calling for a chance of another big snow storm. ugh
