Default starting on the ek

hello every one. it's been a while since i did any body and paint so i started 3 weeks ago. this is my progress so far i have sanded the bumpers with 240 then 320 before i sprayed the primer. after i sprayed the first coat i w/s with 400 then 600. after that i waited till it dried and cleaned it up with wax and grease remover (prep solution) then sprayed a last coat of primer. tomorow i will w/s again then prep for the paint. tell me what you guys think.

I will be spraying vouge silver mettalic after the prep is done. The products I have been using are tcp's kustom shop 2k urethane primer sand paper ranging from 60 to 1200 grit. I picked up the paint and primer plus clear from tcp. I had a buddy spray his eg with it a while back and man it came out great, so I chose to go with tcp instead of ppg. I mean ppg was my first choice but I wanted to try something else. Plus it was 40 dollars cheaper so well see how this fairs out. I have a lot of painting tools and I didn't want to send my ek to body man. So I figured let's put the tools to work. Have you painted the ej yet gorilla??

Looks good man...isn't 600 a little fine to be spraying primer over? Or was it sealer?

lol i had a feeling you would chime in. i used on the old top coat 320 w/s and 400 w/s then primered it. no im not sealing it. im going to hit it with 400 again today then 600 to smooth it out for the base coat. feel free to correct me if you think im wrong. or if you have a better suggestion feel free to comment. no sarcasm intended and thanks for the input.

Sounds like you're good then! I must have mis-read.

Yeah, I've been spending a lot of time in the P & B forums lately, haha

Haha, yeah I hear you. I'm in PA, but I was going to shoot only at night too, until I realized how my compressor was way to loud so I just started spraying whenever and luckily none of the neighbors gave me trouble for it.

Surprisingly I didn't really have any issues with the metallics laying out smoothly. I was careful to mix the base VERY thoroughly before combining it with the reducer. I also sprayed at 70* weather and 30% humidity, with a medium reducer, so it had lots of time to lay out properly. Since you're spraying at night, you should be ok with temperature, but keep an eye on humidity/water in the line. (for contrast, when I did my test panel a few months ago, it was in direct sunlight on a hot day, and the metallics didn't look as even as they do now) Also, a tack coat of base before laying on the medium coats will really help with that.

For the gun, I used an Astro Pneumatic Evo 4014 (1.4mm) for both base and clear...I HIGHLY recommend it! Even running less pressure than the recommended, it still worked great. I think it's a copy of an old Iwata or Sata gun, but I can't remember.

Good luck man, I'm sure it will turn out great! Just take your time and don't rush the spraying. If I can help in any other way, feel free to ask!

Edit: Also, wait to get the prep solution! The parts I didn't clean enough were covered in fisheyes, and I had to let them try and sand them all out and then clean it again anyway. It's easier to just clean it correctly once! You probably know it already, but make sure you've got a cleaner for plastic parts (not just wax & grease remover), because the wax and greaser remover builds static.

well i took a shot at it because the weather was great. here some shot of the based product. i think imma wait till night falls because people were coming home as i was shooting. please keep in mind i live in a apartment town house. so my garage is connected to my patio then apartment. i used a medium reducer as well. so it turn out pretty good. my devillbiss shot like **** and i had to go to the 1.8 tip on my primer gun which is also a devilbiss. i think the tip on my base and clear is a 1.3. i should have got the 1.4 or 5. well enough rambling here some pictures. i havent wet sanded it yet so you wanna give me some more tips on w/s the base baker? thanks for all the anserws and input.

you're not supposed to sand base colors... unless you have some discrepancy in the paint that is, of course. then u would re-base it.

i havent gotten around to painting my EJ yet... still doing the body work, im laggin because im lazy. i really needa get on it especially after seeing how dedicated you are to your project. i still am undecided to what color i want it. if i do a color change, i'd have to pull the engine and do the engine bay... im thinking about a respray or a nice variation thats similar. we'll see.

u should've masked off your grille in the bumper! unless u wanted it painted too... other then that... its looking good. the clearcoat is where dreams are made or broken. cant wait to see how that comes out too! lol goodluck
