Default 2002 civic ex auto, won't go into gear SOMETIMES

My sister has an auto 2002 civic EX. It drives fine everytime i try to diagnose it but she says that when she drives it around all day. She might stop somewhere, and then when she goes to leave, its like there is not much power or something....and the speedo won't work and it comes out of gear. One time she called me and i rushed to her, and i couldnt get it to go into gear, it would never go in if i selected R, or andy of the D's...but it obviously goes into park. 10 mins later we try it again and what do you know...it goes into gear and the speedo works. now this is from a women but my mom said she smelled "electrical burning" or something, but i dont know if she was just smelled good ole catalytic converter gases. WTF do you guys thing. I took it out for a 15min drive this afternoon and it was like it should be.

Hmm.. intermittent failure is usually electrical rather than mechanical.

Have you scanned it for stored codes? Is, or has the MIL come on?

what is that supposed to mean.

I drove it today and it drives perfect...its just this random thing. What sensor could short to keep the tranny from going into drive when i select drive.

Okay, I have to resort to looking at the manual for this one. I don't have an automatic, so troubleshooting it is somewhat new to me.

Symptom: Engine runs but vehicle does not move in any gear

Possibilities:
1. Low ATF
2. Shift cable broken or out of adjustment
3. Joint in shift cable and transmission or body worn
4. ATF pump worn or binding
5. Regulator valve stuck or spring worn
6. ATF stainer clogged
7. Mainshaft worn or damaged
8. Final gears worn or damaged
9. Transmission-to-engine assembly error
10. Axle disengaged

Symptom: Torque converter clutch does not engage

Possibilities:
1. Defective torque converter check valve
2. Defective Lock-up timing valve
3. Defective Lock-up shift valve
4. Defective Lock-up control valve
5. Defective torque converter clutch piston
6. Defective torque converter clutch solenoid valve
7. Defective A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B
8. Defective input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor
9. Defective output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor
