best cleaner ive used, and ive used most of them, is the GUMOUT STEAM CLEAN, comes in 2 pack, great ****, comes out REALLY nice w/o scrubbing or touching it, comes out even cleaner if u take a brush to the high deposit/dirty areas.

Is it necessary to cover the electrical connections? I know that when my old 84 Corolla engine got water in the dist. cap, the car would idle so rough until it dried over night.
It helps, using electrical tape (cause it holds stronger than masking and wont leave the sticky crap like duct tape, tape plastic around the distributor, or be careful not to drench the electricals and fuel lines/injectors.
This is also a good time to check the seals on the plug wires to make sure they dont leak into the plugs

heres somthing you could do if you have an air hose. Once you clean the engine (what ever you used to cleen it) after the cleen- start the car and let run. While the car is running use the air hose to blow excessive water from the engine bay. That way you dont have to worry about the water..
NOTE: Try not to spray the distributor or electrical parts to long. Its not a problem if you briefly wash it.
