I got a j1 tranny on my jdm b16 all stock. i have a bad third gear only when im 3000 rpm or up it grinds when i go into third i've heard that draining the tranny oil might get rid the grinding? any suggestions besides getting a new tranny?

I had a bad grind going into 5th with my ys1 above 3500rpm. Put Syncromesh in it and it was gone to a slight click above 5500k after about a month. Going to switch out to Friction Modified Syncromesh eventually.

basically the sycros r out of it..sycromesh will work but its only a temperary fix..especially if u like to shift hard. I would recommend replacing the sycros or getting a new tranny

Synchro's don't go bad too often.

Check the mounts, if they're good, then the 3/4 sleeve set likely needs to be replaced.

Okay, so I figured someone would come in and say Syncromesh is only a temp fix. If the grind isnt terrible to the point where its locking you out of the gear at low speed I do not see the point of pulling the trans especially if you cant afford the downtime or cost even. It helped my grind signifcantly and have had zero problems with using it and the whole trans shifts smoother. $30-40 bucks to help it if its not too bad vs. hundreds for a tranny that just might have the same problem sooner or later? Up to you.

Syncromesh ftw Any time I had a slight tranny issue this stuff usually did the trick.

Syncromesh wins again. Filled up my y80 that was popping out of 5th and getting harder to throw in Reverse... problems solved and she shifts smooth as butta.

since this thread is here..i have a grind in my 3rd gear (j1 tranny) at high rpm, 8k. sometimes it doesnt even go in. now just recently, it starts to slightly grind at regular daily driving. but not all the time.

i was talking to a friend and he will rebuild my tranny for me with new 3/4/5 syncros/sleeve/spring and a new 3rd gear.

my question is, will a 3rd gear from a hydro tranny work in my j1 trans? (XSI, bigger shaft than then 90-91 usdm LS trans)

he says he's rebuilt multiple trans using hydro 3rd in cable trans. but i just want to make sure..
