car is a 94 sedan LX with power locks

door latches and unlatches with no issue and both handles (inside and outside) open and close no problem at all
here is the issue
I can't lock or unlock my passenger door with the key from the outside (the key does nothing). Also, the power locks switch on the driver door locks and unlocks all doors except the front passenger lock.
I can see the lock trying to go down but it jams and return to the unlock position. The only way to lock the door is to close the door violently and push down the lock button manually. Sometimes this has to be repeated a few times to lock the door.
Also, when the button does go down after I press it (after closing the door violently a few times), I can hear a mechanical clunk from the door.

What could cause this problem? I'm assuming it can't be the latch since it works fine. Could it be my lock assy? What would I need to replace?
