Just bought a very clean 99 Honda Accord EX Coupe V6! Got a few inital questions?
I just got my Accord and I absolutely love it so far. I did all my research on these cars before buying and I read that some people had some transmission problems with them. I called the dealer and Honda of America and gave them the vin on the car to check it. They said this one has no recalls for auto trans and they said if it would have had trans problems then it would have happened already. They said some models made at different plants had trans problems but not this one. The car was driven very gently and not beat on by the original owner as well so not a lot of strain on the trans. They also told me it had the ignition switch and egr recall performed. This car has been dealer maintained and is in awesome shape with 125,000 miles on it. I plan on keeping it for sometime as well and want to keep it running right. The tranny shifts perfect and the engine runs like new. The car is quiet and smooth. Just trying to ask you alls opinions on the new car overall? The Drivetrain longevity I can expect? and overall value of my purchase at $4000 cash. The car is just about perfect and loaded to the hill with tan leather, red exterior, wood grain, power everything. Thanks in advance! PICS in sig
was the t-belt done? if not do it NOW. if that sucker snaps u're toast. Also those delphi alternators are not known to last very long..............
Looks great. $4000 good buy, dunno what KBB is for that model, but still good for 4k.
The trannys from 98-02 are all bad. It's a 50/50 chance. Some peeps trannys last a good while, but others have gone thru 2 or more in less than 100k miles. I think it really depends on how the car was driven. Mine is at 105k and its starting to kinda go. No slippage, just sloppy shifting.
heres some tips:
Do a tranny drain and fill with Honda ATF fluid, at 3 separate oil changes. Keeping the fluid fresh prevents gunk from building up in the tranny..this is one cause of failure. Don't flush it, that will stir up all the gunk in the tranny and cause problems.
Switch your oil to 10w30 conventional to help make your engines low end last. The 5w20 oil is too thin and will blow by your piston rings. Trust me on this, I used 5w20 and saw the oil blowby on my pistons when I had my top end swap at 100k miles. 5w20 is recommended to obtain the MPG rating, but it's too thin.
If your alternator does go bad, switch to a DENSO brand from a 01-03 odyssey van.
And like the guy above said..make sure that timing belt, both tensioner pullies & water pump have been changed.

nice..one of the pictures seem odd. the driver door paint doesnt look right.
Take the car to a gas station and see if the shade changes. Here in LA, the gas station has a effect on paint. If a car has been is re-painted or touched up on any section, it is easily visible.
Good luck...4K is a bit much. I would try for $3500 especially if the T belt has not been changed.

The timing belt has not been changed and it has 126k on it. I know it needs to be changed out. Are there any sounds or signs before it snaps? Also how many of you have not had tranny problems? Mine seems good and it has not driven hard I promise. I would love to keep the car a long time, but all of this trans problem talk has me worried.
Find an independent shop that will give you a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on their work. Dealers won't give you that kind of warranty. Use HONDA OEM parts only.

Well I am considering selling the car now due to all the trans problem talk. There seem to be plenty of used transmissions from the 03 and above available. Will these fit my 99? It is a very clean car and would love to keep it, but in your opionions would you sell it before I run into a bunch of problems? I am a college student and money is tight. I do not mind replacing the trans, but do not want the same issues. The guys from the honda dealer said the 03 and up trans were better. Will they fit?
