Default safe to drive with 2 belts? need help ASAP

96 GSR over 100k
this morning (5:00am) i took my gf to the airport which is 1.5hrs away..30mins out of town i heard squeals and squeaks..been hearing this noise every morning when i warm up the car..so i'm thinking it's the PS making noise since it's old and leaking...look in my rear view mirror and the pickup behind me is flashing his light at me..then i heard and felt the car ran over something..

Pulled over and the belt that go from crank pulley to a/c comp, is shredded and half are gone..

the Belt Tensioner Pulley had SEIZED and Locked up..now i know it's not the PS making noise but it's the tensioner pulley going out..

question: is it safe to keep driving with only 2 belts? alt. belt and PS belt..drove over 200miles atleast this morning w/out any issue..don't know if it can handle long term..it's cold here and i do not want to go out and work on the car..

for you guys that are running DELETE A/C and PS..how many belt(s) are you running? i know for sure u need the alt. belt..but is the belt for the tensioner pulley necessary?

please help..i don't have another spare car to drive to work..

thanks

wow! your car must be a magic car. cuz my car needs at least two belts, alt belt and TIMING belt.

to the op. you dont need the ac and ps belt. now what i dont understand is when you talk bout the belt tensioner pulley? do you mean the timing belt tensioner? if so, has the motor been thru the required maintanence? usually around 100k you need to replace the timing belt, belt tensioner, and water pump.

I'm just running an alternator belt, and of course, timing belt. You'll be fine without the power steering belt and A/C belt until you have the time to get new ones. As for the tensioner pulley, I hope you're not talking about the tensioner for the timing belt. If so, you want to get the fixed asap.

I apologize for not being clear. What I meant is the ac idler pulley which is on the ac bracket. Search online and seems like it cost about 30-40$ for the pulley itself. Timing belt was changed 2yrs ago. Other than that everything like oil change and whatnot I did them regularly.

How much tension should there be on the ac belt after I replace the pulley?
Since the car is ok to run with just timing belt and alt belt, I'm willing to wait til spring to replace the idler pulley.

Thank u for the quick reply.

Im with the guys above you, you will be fine without it. I bought a Crank pulley that only has a slot on it for the alternator, just for a cleaner look

Just have the a/c belt tight enough that you can give it a quarter turn. As in when you have the belt fitted, grab the belt itself and turn it up or down, adjust tension until you can roughly turn it a quarter

Theres no need to be an *** about it...obviously he meant external belts. I doubt anyone is going to remove the timing belt based on his suggestion of only needing the alternator belt.

OP: I only run the belt to my alternator...and of course, the timing belt as well. The other accessories (AC, PS) are just that: accessories. They are non-vital parts and can be removed. If you have a PS pump in place and no belt, it will be harder to steer than with the line properly recirculated to the steering wrack. If you plan to remove PS permanently, simply taking off the belt is not enough. You must then remove the pump and so forth...

BTW, i notice you live in Lincoln. My girlfriend is a graduate student there...small world

thank you brother..i will do just that.
Schister66-
^^^dang. talk about small world indeed..she go to UNL i presume??

thank you everyone for the help..i was freaking out this morning, but i remember that most guys with swap motor talked about taking out ps and ac for weight reduction..which mean they are running only 1 belt, and it's the AC belt..

but wanted to be certain i didn't f*ed anything up by doing so..
now i have the ps belt hook up and steering is much easier..i plan on replacing the idler pulley b4 summer, cause i like the AC..plus i have my other car if i want speed, this is just my beater..work and errands..
