need help on 1st time primer
I use Mar-Hyde Ultimate 2K primer on all my projects. It's fast drying, High build, excellent adhesion, and easy to sand. You will also need the Ultimate 2K Catalyst and urethane reducer, and mix them in a 4:1:1 ratio. That's my advice on primer anyway.
Sand or scuff every single spot with 320 grit before priming. Unsanded areas will look glossy until they are scuffed. Get some black spray paint to use for a guide coat before sanding the primer. You spray a very light mist over the primed area and just let it fall onto the primer. It will cover the area in tiny black flecks. Once you sand off all of the black, you know you've sanded everywhere. Any divits or other low areas will still have black paint on them after sanding and should be repaired before painting. Primer is usually wet sanded with 400-600 grit and a painter's block depending on the tech's preference. Coarser grit helps the paint stick better and finer grit shows fewer scratch marks. GL
You should use a sanding block with 320-400 grit paper on it. and you will be able to see where you've sanded because as soon as you touch the primer with the sandpaper it changes color and you will see the high and low spots (lows won't have scratches and the primer will sand off on the high spots). If you want to take the extra step of spraying an extra time that's fine, but you could just prime it and scuff it with a 3m scuffing pad before you paint. and also remember, the better the undercoat looks, the better top coat will look. What paint are you going to use?
