Loud pop / grind / locking / help! (DA9)
About a week ago I was driving normally. (No racing, beating tranny, high revs, etc...) All of a sudden a very loud pop was heard coming from the front end of the car. (underneath). The wheels seemed like they locked and I went skidding a couple feet until I came to a stop. Luckily it was at midnight and nobody was around. My friends tried helping me push the car over but every 3-5ft or so the wheels would lock until it popped and it repeated the process. I left it there overnight and called the towing truck the next morning. The car was off and in neutral and the same thing would happen, when the guy was trying to pull the car onto the bed. I was busy with work UNTIL NOW and whatever and I pulled off the front rims to inspect. my first guess was my tranny...
Heres what I found. (on neutral)
1. The drivers side wheel would rotate maybe 1x or less and then lock.
2. The Boot came off of the drivers side cv joint area (completely)
"same wheel that locks" (strangely)
3. The passenger wheel seems fine. Rotating freely. the cv joints / axle seems completely fine. doesnt seem to have a problem.
What I found (in gear)
1. drivers side wheel does the same thing. (spins and locks)
2. Passengers side rotates freely (in gear)
*******MY QUESTION: What does this seem like to you? Is it common for the axle / cv joints to go bad and completely lock on the drivers side? Doesnt the passenger wheel have to lock while its in gear? ********
MY GUESS IS:
1. bad axle / cv joint (DRIVERS SIDE)
2. clutch teeth catching and screwwed clutch
3. Transmission
(the reason tranny is #3 is because the car moves a couple feet then gets stuck until I rev and it pops and moves a couple feet more... if the tranny went out I dont think id be moving... same with the clutch)
THANKS!

my cv joint boot is ripped and there is no grease and its making a little noise when i turn, but in a straight line its fine. did yours make any noise prior?
I think that was the root of my problem... my lazyness.
Kinda was dangerous too
If you think about it there is no way your axle can lock up your wheels it's either broken or it's not the only thing that wouldn't let it rotate are your brakes your hub perhaps or a busted diff

Well mine was popping the axles out of the tranny my mount on my trans was garbage and i think my tranny was junk too I'm in the process of replacing everything lol
yea i am replacing it once the weather becomes fair, i dont wanna do it in the cold. hopefully it wont do too much harm for 2 weeks, it just started 2 weeks ago and i drive like a woman...
sounds like its rubbing against the suspension.
as someone said above, theres no way the axle can cause a lock up, im going to go with broken diff. as well.
