Default 96 to 97 Civic weight difference uncovered lol

In 96 the 5 speed EX weighed 2483lbs
In 97 the 5 speed EX weighed 2496lbs
In 98 the 5 speed EX weighed 2504lbs

now I dont yet know why the 98 weighs more than the 97 but owning both a 96 and 97 at the same time I found exactly where the extra weight is. Searching many times I could not find anyone that had the reason for the weight increase, it was just assumed it was a chassis reinforcement but unknown as to where. Check it out...

96:

97:

Seems like the bar would weigh more than 13lbs because its pretty thick and heavy duty. I'm not about to unbolt it to weigh it but yeah it goes along the back seat step up area from front seat belt to front seat belt. Looks like a good reinforcement if ya ask me.

It's funny you post that 2nd picture with that big metal bracket, it is indeed a monster! More so than it looks in the picture, and it is strong as hell. I have a passenger seat belt that was giving me problems in my 2000 coupe, so a week ago i found a 1999 coupe with a good seat belt...man it was some work getting that thing out with that big metal bracket, those bolts are in there solid!!!! I got it done, but, what a job!

I had no idea the earlier models were with out it.

It's found directly in front of where the front seat belt retractor mounts, under the carpet, under the rear seat.

As far as year, i myself can confirm on 99-00 model coupes

I was thinking of painting it because I do see some little tiny spots of very light rust. But over time if that grows and grows well it will **** up your carpet and be useless. Those bolts have to be in there pretty damn good with loctite and torque and hearing that they were a pain makes me hesitant to try and remove it to paint it.

I actually have this mentioned in my Trim Differences thread in the end about year differences.

The reinforcement gusset is in '97-'00 Civic coupes, hatches and sedans, but none of the '96 models. I had an extra and could not sell it even though I think it could be a nice safety measure to add to a '96.

Each of the three pieces weight 7 pounds, so it's not just 13 pounds, it's 21 pounds total.

Coupes and hatches use the same parts, but the sedans use a different part number. I'm not sure of the difference, if there is any.

6G Civic Trim Differences

Some of this information is from the manual and some is just stuff I knew.
