Tear it down and replace whichever of the following is worn, 3rd gear synchronizer, slider (aka the sleeve), and/or 3rd gear itself if the engagement teeth are significantly worn.
If you have a mild grind, it could be as simple as just the synchro spring. If it's been doing it a while, you will probably need at minimum a 3-4 sleeve kit and possibly a new 3rd gear.
If it is a bad 3rd gear, wouldn't he need to replace all the gears not just 3rd since they're all specifically cut from the same piece of metal to guarantee they match? In that case it might be cheaper to just find a new tranny if it's not just a synchro problem - if what I'm asking holds true.
No, as long as there is no abnormal wear on the other one, you can just swap in the one. They are not cut from the same piece of metal. The same type, but not the same piece. When a gear is made, they make a bunch of the same one so production happens quicker. Once the quantity of that part is met, they change tooling and go to another part. If you buy both main and counter 3rd from Honda, you won't get a matching set, you'll get whatever they could get their hands on first.
do you guys have any pics of what a worn sleeve/gear looks like? i already have a hard enough time telling whether a synchro looks worn or not..
Actually, I'm getting ready to do a new sleeve kit in a trans for a friend. I'll take pics of what a worn sleeve looks like and what worn synchro springs look like. I'll see if I have a 3rd gear that is worn down, too.

That kit doesn't include the slider or hub. You can take a chance with just the synchros, but if it still grinds you'll be pulling it apart again. What you need is this:
