Purpose of building a "LS/v" is for the LS parts. These parts are the crank and rods. Depending on what pistons you decide to use, whether they are OEM type or aftermarket. If you switch to a GSR crank/rod then you would really just have a GSR bottom end + or - the block girdle in an LS block. Then you also wouldnt have the oil squirters that are located under the pistons. You would basically be doing an LS/V for no reason.

I'm guessing you have a GSR block.

I have an LS crank...still debating on whether or not I'm going to use it when I rebuild my GSR block.

Most likely.....not.

Either the LS rods...or GSR pistons will need to be shaved for them to fit each other. I was thinking about using eagle rods since I don't know how reliable those LS rods are in a motor that's meant to rev higher.

All in all I calculate I would have to spend $300 for the eagle rods (when I could use the stock GSR rods)...plus pay the machine shop $100 for the shaving, plus the LS crank (another $100)...plus worry if this motor will need to be re-opened in 3 years since I don't know how reliable the setup is....all for a small/decent amount of torque.

Definitely not the biggest bang for your buck at $500.

Since I don't have that large of a budget..I'm most likely (unless a pile of money lands on my lap) going to stick with my GSR crank and rods.

To each their own

GSR and LS rods are the same in terms of material. The only difference is the size.

The similarity in materials when comparing OEM LS rods and OEM GSR rods is moot.

My bad, didn't realize he has an LS block. Yeah...I would never recommend putting in GSR rods and crank in the LS. Defeats the purpose of trying to build the LS/VTEC.

huh? this thread is confusing me a bit. ls vtecs are built for the ls parts. you cant put a gsr crank in anything but a b18c block. if your doing a ls/v build you have to get an ls crank along with some other stuff like oil pump, main girdle, etc. but the gsr water pump, oil pan, and some other stuff will work on a ls block. im doin a ls/vtec build right now. i know all about the switch lol

Ls crank has about 1834cc correct if i am wrong and gsr has about 1782cc about not sure but ls has a bigger stroke that is the point of a LS-VTEC and ls rods are the strongest oem rods

You are wrong ona few things.
1) LSv are mainly built for the LS rods/Crank to get the bigger stroke. Ls blocks are used because they are cheaper and easier to get than a GSR and when you find them they will ususally be a shortblock. I have seen people selling LS shortblocks for 100-125 and you get almost everything you need plus some.
2) You can use a GSR crank/rod combination in any B18 motor..
2) LS do not have block girdles.
3) You only have to use the GSR oil pan, pickup/ windage tray IF you use the girdle.
4) You can use an LS oil pump if it is from 96+. All B18 oil pumps from 96+ are the same whether it is LS, GSR, or Type R.

You do need a Vtec water pump and a GSR timing belt.
LS motors dont have a girdle.
