Tearing down a tranny, is that a LSD!?
I had a H22 tranny laying in the garage since a while, couldnt be used because the casing was broken. Since i've got time to kill, i decided to tear it down. This was the first one i touched since the one we did in mechanic school back in 2003.. Lucky me, it doesnt have to be rebuilt hehe
Oh yeah, for all of you guys and gals who like to buy jaydeem stuff, or plainly used engines/transmissions, this is the kind of surprises you can find
Code number

Messing around, not really knowing what i was doing, (too lazy to go get the shop manual), i tool off about all the bolts i could (im sending the casings for scrap). I had a really nasty surprise...What first looked like grease, was sludged oil with TONS of metal shavings of various sizes, from almost dust to big nasty pieces;

It seems like an horrible massacre has been comitted within those aluminium walls;

Now, you can see the hole in the casing. I'm just wondering, was it dropped? Or did
the end bearing just desintegrated, causing excessive play in the shaft, and massive damage all around it?
Notice the bearing casing halfway thorn off.

Now to the question part. I've been told that if you look trough a differential and there is a pin obstructing the way in the middle, it's an open diff. But if it's see-trough, it's a LSD. But people say alot of things. Now, all you experts
and real conaisseurs, does this looks like a LSD?

The only thing that troubles me is that it's been in this forsaken tranny. It's not in perfect shape. After quick examination, some of the gear teeth corners are chipped off.

I guess the interior of the assembly must be full of **** too.. Would that thing be salvageable or it's good for paper weight?

Did you need to repeat the pictures, questions, and stuff 3 times? Please go back and edit the post.
on topic, I can't imagine that just dropping the tranny would bust a hole like that and smash the bearings. I would imagine it was just bad flex within the shaft that caused the bearings to blow from inside and out and blew the hole in the casing.
Doesn't the H22 trannys have shaft flex issues?

And i dont think dropping the tranny would have caused the internal damages, just the hole on the casing
