Default opinions on building a boosted b20 vtec

i am in the process of rebuilding my 98 integra gsr and was originally going to build the same set up i had last time (b18c). but i came across a decent buy for a b20b block and decided to buy it.. but now i am having some doubts on building it.. i am building a b20b ls vtec turbo (will have a gsr head) ill be running a turbonetics t4 on low boost around 10-12 pounds. im building the block somewhat. its a very clean block with low low mileage, bored 20 over, and has a block guard. im doin je pistons (9:1 comp.) with scat rods for the block, maybe eagle crank but probably stock. the main thing im worried about is that im running stock sleeves because im short on money right now. but i always run low boost and never beat the motor. i know a good tune is key for this build and i plan on getting it tuned perfectly.. id just like to hear some opinions on what everyone thinks of this set up.. some ppl i know say do it and others say dont.. so just let me know what you think. thanks

If you are short on change I would say to shy away from this type of setup, it seems like a money pit. Just my $0.02

Yes that is exactly what I meant, LS-Vtec engines take a lot of time and money to put together correctly, maintain, and tune. It is my opinion tho, and to each his own. No doubt if you have everything in working order this motor will be as fast as anything on the road tho

i would just rebuild, and boost the b18c... at the end of the day, you will save some dough, be about just as fast, if not faster...

although, since you are going to boost anyway, and YOU NEED A TUNE, then a b20vtec wouldnt be too bad.. just build the engine as good as you can... hahaha.. lots or reading.. good machine work, etc etc etc...

i like boosted b18c's, though.. they are very nice..

yea im forsure gonna take my time and do it the right way.. i want it to be the best it can be.. and yea i loved the motor setup that i had in my car but i blew it up last year unfortunely.. the only thing was it lagged in low rpm.. it was more of a top end car with so much power output after 4-5000 rpm.. it scared me at times lol

most turbo applications will do this, it is known as turbo lag. Honda engines are notorious for this due to the the high powerband of the vtec system.

B20 blocks are the weakest of Honda blocks and not the best to boost on stock sleeves...........

they work fine if you stay under 15 psi AND have a killer tune.. if you want to boost the shi+ out of ANY honda b/d series, you should sleeve it

I'd agree but, not offense to the OP but do you think someone asking those questions would do either. Most kids new to the game throw a turbo on a beat motor and boost it til it grenades!

if you're going to put that much work into the motor just take the little extra precaution and get the block sleeved, it'll be worth it in the long run

yea i agree with everything everyone is saying.. and b20s are weaker than b18 or b16 but can be nicer in the long run with the right work done to them.. i really really want to sleeve it but i just am drained right now and dont have the 1500 or so to do it.. but this makes want to just go with sleeves and then i can run higher boost also

well, the money you spend now to sleeve, could save you thousands later.. an oz of prevention is better than a lb of fix.. lol
