vtec controller or ecu tuning? differences?
hi fellas- I just have a quick question. If I have a chipped ecu (P28) and I use Crome to change my vtec enabling rpm, what is the difference between doing that and spending the $300+ on an aftermarket vtec controller? Dont they do the exact same thing? Thanks
a vtec controller does that, control vtec.
when you get it chipped, even a base tune/map it adjust your timing also.
vtec needs to be tuned with your timing, or else you won't get the most benefit from it.

also you can control your fuel and other thinkg lol im a little brain dead and i have one lol but there great but when you start wanting hiering numbers your gona need the s100 and throw out the vtec controler as you can control everything with a computer
VAFC controllers are not very accurate. ECU tuning is way more accurate and you will see the best results if done with aid of an experienced tuner on a dyno.
dont be a goon, choose a tune. ...although, on a z6 auto, i don't think it really matters.
and btw lowering the vtec crossover point has absolutely zero positive benefits.

I dissagree- I am now boosted with 7 psi intercooled and I DEFINITLY feel a BIG difference when I turned vtec on earlier as the boost can now get into the cylinders more efficiently (per the high and more aggressive cam profile of the vtec)

Bingo. Search google for why and you will find a writeup on exactly why it does not do a damn thing unless you have aftermarket cams(and a proper tune as well). Vtec is meant to hit at one point to pick up the slack from the lower lobes. The higher lobes are for high rpm only and will not benefit at all by using during low rpms. This is the reason why there is a vtec changeover in the first place. I'm sure someone else can explain this a little better.
OK well getting back to the original question then, by using crome and my ecu to tune my car I dont need to ever get a vtec controller then correct because the ecu does the same thing and more correct?
the ECU does a much much better job of controlling VTEC than a VTEC controller could ever do.

+1 instead of paying $300 on a stupid gadget that doesnt work get it tuned. a vtec controler just makes vtec work at a different time but when i was tuning a friends car hes stupid vtec controller made it a pain and didnt help. the vtec controller does not control -AFR- it does not change to the HIGH CAM maps where it adds fuel and timing to make vtec function like it should. vtec controllers will jus make the noise so pretty much bog out your car.
