timing belt help
ok guys my old timing belt has jumped a couple teeth on the cam gear of my d16a6 i rotated the cam so the gear now reads tdc but my crank does not. can i rotate the crank while the belt isnt on? or will my pistons hit a valve while my cam stays put. and how do i install the new belt without throwing off the timing??
You must remove the belt to correctly set the timing again.
You can turn the crank but PLEASE only turn it COUNTERCLOCKWISE since its an interference engine!
Once the marks are aligned hold the rachet handle against the floor so the bottom mark does not move. It acts like a stop so the crank cank spin. Try to lock the cam gear also. Then slip the belt on and check marks. Follow tensioner tightening sequence as in your manual.

What I would do is first line up TDC at the crank. Yes it is the white line. Loosen the tensioner bolt and push in on the timing belt. While pushing in on the belt tighten the tensioner up a bit to hold it there.
EDIT: I just reread you post and you are replacing the belt so do these steps, then remove the covers and the crank pulley. If you are replacing the belt I would replace the water pump and the tensioner too. Believe me you will be glad you did because I didn't replace the waterpump and two months after, it went on me.
So you have replaced the WP and tensioner and slid the belt on so just skip the next step and go to HERE
Once you do this you can just slide the belt off the camgear and position it like I stated above. HERE then loosen the tensioner bolt again and rotate the crank counterclockwise 3 degrees or enough to put tension on the front side of the belt. Then tighten the tensioner bolt and rotate the crank around at least one revolution just to check if it will clear the valves and your marks line up again.
Put the covers back on and start it. I would also check your timing too.
I am sure if you search you will find the diagram for the position of the cam gear.
Here it is in this post. Look at the circle in the middle labeled for the Si.
