Icon2 Too many miles for auto fuild change?

I have a 1998 CR-V auto, FWD model with 178K on the dash.

Recently found out trans fluid has never been changed. I've been told by Honda mechanics and the like that changing the fluid this late could cause more problems then good because of the debris that will settle when it is drained, and so on.

I know NOTHING about Autos, always dealt with manual transmissions.

Any truth to this or just speculation?

I know this might sound like a stupid question, but does anyone know if a CR-V transmission would be a bad idea on a B18B? Not really looking for speed obviously, just wondering if it would work.
