If one cam gear is off a tooth (V6) did i bend the valves?
I just replaced the timing belt on my v6 accord. it was a piece of cake for a v6... or at least i thought. after I got it all back together the car would skip at idle a tad... it sounds timing is off. It was kinda hard to line up the mark on the firewall head... so I guess i made the wrong assumption that all the gears stayed at TDC like i left them when i took off the belt. this is really pissing me off because I have changed many timing belts and never had this problem once. so my question is did i bend the valves if I put the belt on 1 tooth off? also do any of you guys have any tricks to making sure the belt is on correctly on the firewall head? it is extremely hard to make sure the marks are lined up at that angle since you cant really look at it straight on. any input would be helpful. thanks
also the skip is only noticeable below 1000 rpm but i do admit the car is a bit sluggish at highway speed and off the line
Sometimes valves will bend, sometimes they won't. Only way to know is if you put the belt on right and do a compression check. V6 belts are cake though, so it shouldn't be that hard to correct it.
I think it might if the engine was running while it skipped. But, I doubt you'll bend a valve though; gotta do a compression check like slowmofo said to be sure.
There's a 94/95 Accord with a F22B2 engine that came in. Found out that the Timing Belt snapped. It was a goodyear t-belt, and it looked brand new. The owner got lucky as hell cause there was no bent valve while inspecting it.
So I guess the dude lucked out, but he didn't want to fix it at all. So my co-work said he'll pay for the tow fee if the owner lets him have it. lol I was like "Son of a b!tch."

the motor felt fine when i turned it over by hand with the cover still off, like i didnt feel any resistance or funny sounds
I have seen a 95, with the F22B1, off by two teeth. No problems.
What you encounter is interference engines and non interference. That is lets say if the piston is at TDC, if the exhaust valve in this case happens to be completely open, will the piston and valve hit? Or does the valve not open enough to hit the piston.
I believe that they do not have interference in the 4 and 6 cylinder 5th gens. But dont quote me.

It sucks to have to take it all apart again. i think i would know it if the valves were bent. it is virtually impossible for the timing to be off more than 1 tooth it looked correct before i put it back together.

yeah, youd definitely know if the valve kissed the piston.

You could end up with problems like this......pictures at the bottom of the page is what I am referring to.
