Help Please: front cv shaft / axle question
I'm changing out the front passenger side cv shaft on my wife's CRV. I've done it once before on this car but got a bad reman. one or something so here I am 18 months later changing it again.
I can't get the axle to go all the way into the differential. I slid the splines in, it stopped, I gave it a good push and it went in further till it felt like it hit metal and stopped. I saw a 1/4 inch gap or so and didn't think that was right (axle not quite butted up against the tranny seal). I tried and tried but it wouldn't go further so I figured that must be it. I put it all back together and test drove it. It is leaking tranny fluid from the axel so it must go in further. Took it back apart and don't know how to get it further in.
Any suggestions?
P.S. I'm following this tread on how to do it but there are no specifics on having difficulty getting the axle to go all the way in. Just need that extra 1/4 inch.

Here are some pics of where the new axle meets the differential/transmission. You can see that there's about a 1/8 - 1/4 inch gap between the axle face and the axle seal (just replaced the seal with a new one).
Should it be touching or is this as far as it goes? If it needs to go further, how do I get it to go in further?
ANY tips would be helpful.

Soooo... Anyone?
To recap, I've swapped out a front passenger cv shaft on a CRV, splines line up, gave it a tap and the thing slid in about an inch further and stopped hard. Is the new axle all the way in or do I need to go till it touches the new axle seal I put in at the transaxel/differential?
Thanks

needs to go in further. usually just grab the knuckle assembly and give it a quick bam and it should pop in. assuming its not a pos napa, advanced, auto zone junk
Hey postman, thank you for your reply.
It is a Kragen/O'Rilies replacement cv shaft but it is not remanufactured, it's new. I have tried tapping it with a 2 lb sledge on the end with an old axle nut on it and nothing. I have removed this thing and put it back in 3 times today. I've inspected the clip on the end and it looks fine, not bent or anything. The shaft slides right in on the splines and stops with an inch or two to go, then I give it a good push or tap it with a hammer and it pops in to the point where it is now. I don't want to hit it any harder for fear I will mess up the transmission or the new cv shaft.
Any ideas? Does it just require more force? Does it for sure have to go in more?
Thanks

did you already turn you core in? a lot of times the "new" units out there are junk. if you still have the reman axles take the two and hold the inner stubs together and see if one is a little bit longer best bet it to get a oe reman unit from the same place just open the box before you take it. auto or manuel?

Thanks for the reply, I will test drive it tomorrow and see if it's still leaking.
Thanks for the reply Matt, I'll go back to the Kragen Auto store and have them look up the part # again to be sure it's the right one. Unfortunately I already turned in the core. Good thinking, I didn't even think of them possibly giving me the wrong part since it did go in most of the way and kind of works. I suppose many honda and acura axles are very similar but not the same so some of them may kind of work like mine is.
I went to the parts store and they looked up the part # they gave me. It matched as the correct part for my '00 CRV awd ex w/ auto trans for the passenger side. He then looked at my original receipt from the one I bought from the 18 months ago and it had a different part #. They have 2 part brands for this axle and when they were warrantying my 18 month old one that went out they gave me their other brand instead of the brand I first bought 18 months ago. The old brand costs more. He ordered me one of the more expensive ones that I bought 18 months ago and it will be in tomorrow. They made me pay for it but will refund the money when I pick up the part tomorrow since it's a warranty issue. The guy used to work on hondas and knew exactly what problem I was having and agreed that it sounds like the axle may be the wrong length. We will see.
Well, I resolved the issue so I wanted to post the outcome in case anyone else has this issue in the future so they have the answer.
As Insanemike24 & Matt55 suggested, the part was wrong. I had them order the exact part I bought 18 months ago and it snapped right into place with no gap between the face of the axle and the transaxle. The part they sold me IS supposed to fit according to their system but they carry 2 different brands of axles and the "new" brand they gave me just doesn't match up.
I measured them before I put the good one in and here's what I found:
Here's the good one that works

And here's the one that was too long

I also replaced the axle seal since I was in there to make sure there were no leaks. I've taken the axle in and out so many times I figured it may be damaged by now so I wanted to be on the safe side.

And finally, here is the finished product, a properly seated axle that goes all the way in and doesn't have a gap between the axle seal and the part of the axle that goes up against it.

So the passenger side axle/CV shaft was replaced to get rid of a vibration that would happen when accelerating and when turning right. The new axle solved this problem and everything is good to go. Now that I've had so many chances to take the axle out and put it back in I've become pretty quick at it. It's a simple job that only requires you to remove 3 nuts and 1 bolt once the wheel is off.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions which led to a successful repair.

So I am having this exact problem in reverse - I bought a new CV axle for my 97 CR-V but the one that came out was the long one as shown above, the replacement I bought (supposedly OEM) is the short one as above. My question is if I use the short one and the C-Clip can not push in far enough to engage * will it still be ok?*Hypothetical as I haven't tried to put it in yet - I'm reluctant to damage it and be unable to return.
