Default Oil pan question... Deep and Shallow pans.

okay so my oil pan is trash and ive been searching for a new one. found one on CL i thought would work for $20. too shallow. doesnt fit over the windage tray on the side next to the tranny. so i went for an other off CL that was supposed to be for a GS-R, it cost me $50. again, too shallow. doesnt fit over the side with closest to the tranny. the windage tray hangs too low/the pan isnt deep enough. SO, i went on rockauto, bought a GSR pan DOHC V-Tec everything.... go it, and its the same as the others. too shallow. wtf is the deal!? idk what eyar my block is. but i have a CRX with a poorman's type R in it. but i know my block is a GS-R. it says B18C1 on it. so whats the deal? now i have to send a pan back to Rockauto... where can i get the right pan?
HELP! please. this is stressing me out. lol.

i talked to the Honda dealer. the guy was a dick and said that he couldnt help me cuz he knew nothing about acuras and all he did was grab boxes off of shelves. that pissed me off. so ic alled the acura dealer thats like an hour away and they said from the block numbers off my mmotor that it was a 96 GS-R block. the guy said that the part numbers for the oil pans for that block were the same for 98 and 96. i originally ordered a 98 (doesnt fit). so im confused. unless the oil pan on my car is from something entirely different... idk why it would have to be though. this car is stock crank and stuff. the windage tray doesnt look aftermarket to me. so why cant i find an oil pan that will fit? if anybody knows anything about these 2 oil pans that look the same, except for the depth on the tranny side, could yo uplease let me know?
thanks everybody

Post pictures....the GSR oil pan is shallow compared to the LS. With it being a rebuilt engine, who knows, maybe they did some funky stuff and put on a LS pickup or something. Then again, I've never tried a CL pan on a GSR.

by CL i mean i got the first two off of CraigsList.
from people who said they were GSR pans.
they are both too shallow on the side by the trans.
ill try and post pics if i can.
but youre saying the LS pan is deeper on that side?
if so, that is what i need. something thats a couple CM deeper on that side.

If you buy an oem pan off CL then make sure it says P72 or P73 on it. The code will be stamped on the bottom. Besides the gsr pan, a type r pan will also work. Maybe the people you bought them from sold you 92-93 GSR pans? Either that or they are lying scumbags like most of the people trying to sell junk on CL.

As for the aftermarket companies, maybe they are just going by the bolt pattern and think the same pan can work for all b-series?

other way around actually; the 94+ gsr/itr pan is deeper than the ls one.

Sorry, my internet lingo is a bit off now. Indeed it should have P72 stamped in the bottom if its off a GSR (the LS does not have any stamping). The Type R is also stamped P72 (none are stamped P73).

The moroso and other aftermarket pans do fit both because the pattern is the same and they run a different oil pickup then the OEM motor (ie, if you run a moroso pan, you have to run a moroso pickup for your specific engine).

on the pan i ordered from Rockauto had no stamping whatsoever. i checked the thing thrice atleast.

as for the two scumbag pans i got off craigslist, the only stamping they have is on the brim where the bolt holes are and ones says EH29 and one says EA07. other than that there are no numbers on them. again, the one i got off of rockauto.com had no numbers one the brim or on the bottom of the pan...

My bad about the p73 thing, never seen a type r pan in person and made an assumption. So yeah, for either one P72 is stamped on the bottom.

If you can't find an oem one for a decent price, I would try buying one from autozone or somewhere local like that, so if it doesn't fit you can return it easily.

This one is $133

im jsut wondering now if the windage tray is off another block... another block that has a deeper one. because i did not originally build the motor. i rebuilt the bottom end but i just took apart what was there, did a nwe crank and put it back together. so im wondering if the original builder did a deeper windage tray along with a deeper oil pan. any other oil pans you guys know of that are like the GSR but deeper? same bolt pattern just deeper?

yep, it might have an LS windage tray on it.
I was having that problem when my ls swapped crx had a hole in the pan, and ever pan I tried was too shallow like you said, but I lucked out when a friend had a moroso 5 quart pan for sale for $50. I bought it and it fit great.

as others have mentioned, there are really only 2 pans...p72 (gsr/type-r) or p30 (b16/ls). i would try a genuine honda gsr pan stamped p72 on the bottom by the drain bolt. only other thing i can thing off would be later model crv's, they look pretty deep on this pic..but i doubt thats what you are running into (stamped PNA or RAA)
