b16a swap failed emissions testing
i have a 91 dx hatch with a b16 swap. its failed emissions 5 times so far (hc and co2)...i had to meet with a repair tech from the test station before the 6th test. well this guy tells me my cat is cheap and not working at all even tho its brand new. he said to try a bigger size cat and maybe moving it closer to the header will get it hotter and lower my hc's...whats a good brand of converter? does that even matter? right now its got a magnaflow
U gotta get the cat hot like go for a 1 or 2 drive but run the crap out of ur car city driving revit up at stops just drive like a **shole so it heats up because the hotter ur cat is the better it works............it worked for me
what kind of converter? any mods or stock b16a? ive driven quite a bit before taking it for the test and it did nothing to help....its pissing me off
Aftermarket cats sometimes use ceramic plates. They don't work nearly as well as a stock honeycomb type.
'KINGVEM' has a point on getting the plate type of cat hot by driving like a madman, but then you risk getting your motor too hot which raises your NoX (if your state even tests for NoX).
Can you post up your numbers for the failed tests?
Helps give a better idea of what might be wrong.
OH - and what ECU are you running?

HCs is unburnt fuel telling me that that your ignition system is messing up - cap, rotor, plugs, wires. air filter?
What octane fuel were you running? Any fuel additives in the gas?
NoX indicates you should check your timing. Advanced timing raises your NoX.
Also fuel filter, vacuum leaks, map sensor, o2 sensor, and cooling system (fan not working or not running a thermostat will help you to fail)?
Last would be the cat converter if everything else checks out.

Try going to a muffler shop with ur paper work talk to the guy see what he can do for u I mean its worth a shot....u can't just pay for a pass???
muffler shop wont do much...all hell do is suggest a new cat and i got 2 of them bitches on there. i could get a waiver but you have to spend at least 475 bucks towards emissions related repairs at certain shops. they give you a list. theres nothin to replace..everythings new. and 475 bucks is a bit much to just hand over if theyre not fixing anything
