Grade 5 bolt strong enough for suspension
I need to know if a grade 5 bolt is strong enough to hold the strut on the lca. That's the only bold the store that I went to had and I needed one fast so thats what I got till I could find a higher grade or find out if it was ok.
I should think so, many people wouldnt even care what grade they have and go to a place like Home Depot and get ungraded ones. Grade 5 is much better than ungraded and I dont hear many problems with ungraded ones.
Grade 10 for suspension. Thats what mr. Wong from ASR told me to use when i had some issues with the hardware for the subframe.
He said anything inferior could snap specially under spirited driving, or autox. I dont know how you drive but 5 sounds potentially dangerous

If I can find an oem one that's long enough I'd prob get that. But I think I'm just gonna go to home depot tomorrow. Pep Boys just had the grade 5 that was long enough and I needed something to get my car home. I had to drive like 40 miles tonight and I was worried the hole time. Luckily the highways here aren't too bad. First thing tomorrow is deff a stronger bolt. Even if it is strong enough I don't feel safe w/ it.
So it's either grade 8 or 10.9 right? or higher obviously

the 10.9 is metric and according to the site posted above, it sounds like it's equal to our SAE grade 8 bolts.
I've ran grade 8 hardware on my suspension and even with spirited driving and jacking the whole rear up by one LCA, none have snapped thus far. I'd rather have all batch tested hardware and such, but I'm broke.

in order to break a grade 8 bolt you would need a LOT of spring rate and a very quick hit on the arm. even then it's hard to imagine. i remember jumping a stock integra over some fairly steep railroad tracks at 110-120mph. came down, totally bottomed the suspension and ripped a big chunk of the front tires on that seam in the fenders. no broken bolts.....
what about a junk yard??
I did replace the bolt w/ a grade 8. w/ the other bolt i wasn't at ease w/ having it so I knew I couldn't keep it in for long
