timing belt help
hey guys im doing my first engine swap this weekend and i need to put a new timing belt on. i never did it before so i need some help.the engine isnt in the car yet so i just neet to know how to line the belt up to get the timing right. thanks
If there is a timing belt on the motor, turn the motor to TDC. You will need to line the hash mark on the crank pulley(gear if you have the pulley off, in which case you would like up the mark line on the gear with the arrow on the oil pump) with the mark on the timing belt cover. You cam(s) marks should be aligned with the timing marks on the head(or the plastic cover) and will sometimes say "up" depending on the motor. Once you get the motor time you will need to loosen the tensioner, and slide the belt off.
Installation is basically the opposite of removal. Once you get the belt tight, spin the motor over by hand a couple times, and line it back up on TDC. If the marks are not right, do it over. If at any time the crank pulley gets tight, or hard to turn, STOP. chances are you did not time it right. Hope this helps. Good luck.
