Question about bar'ing and ref stations
I just sent this message to one of my freinds but they are usually slow at answering so I want to just throw this out to anyone else that might know. Its my full jdm 89 white hf crx.
1. can i use a jdm engine if i am using usdm throttle body, usdm ecu, and all usdm smog parts (cat/o2wire etc)?
2. what all do i need in order to bar a different engine into my car? (fyi, this is for fuel economy, not for power)
3. do you have any friends that i could speak to directly (or yourself) or someone that works at a state ref station
4. should have been my first question, the state still has ref stations open correct? i heard they closed down in 07 or 08 for a while
hoping u a little something about hondas
my current setup: fully stock d16a6, fuel control obdohopeful
future setup: d15z1 (jdm d15b) vtec-e (vtec-economy), fuel control obd1
after listing that i also realized another question i have.
5. when converting from one obd to another, can i just use an adapter from hondata or some similar company and still be able to bar it? Or do I have to swap harnesses?
6. after the swap i should be getting about 65+ mpg, do you know of any places that are good with tuning for fuel economy, i know u can tune for 30-35% better fuel economy, which means i might be able to get 80+ mpg.

From what I have read using the search function at the top of the page, where all your questions are mostly answered, jdm motors are no longer being accepted for bar.
you can use a jdm motor as a replacement engine in any 88-91 ef chassis if its considered similar in type to the stock hf motor...perfect replacement motors would be d15b non vtec and zc sohc and using your stock emission control components on the new engine...if you plan on going mpfi then you will need to use the complete d16a6 sensors and intake manifold.
as for a d15z1 motor then yes you can bar it since it is coming from a USDM chassis and would be considered a engine change and not a replacement motor...!!!

d15b vtec wont work in a ef chassis since it was never offered in that generation of vehicle...you will either have to get a d15z1 and bar it or get a d15b non vtec or zc sohc as a replacement motor and use the D16A6 intake manifold and sensors if you plan on going mpfi...!!!

one more question for you, dang you seem to know so much @@
what if i just did the swap and didnt say anything, the next time i had a smog, would they even say anything to me? do they check the engine badge or do they just check it by seeing how the emissions read?

you wont have a problem smogging it...the problem will lie if you get popped by the 5-0 and they send you to the state ref to make sure the swap is legal then you will have to rip it out and put either the stock motor, jdm replacement motor or get a d15z1 or d16z6 bar'd to make it legal...its kind of a 50/50 risk if you want to take your chances...!!!
this link will answer all your questions about what is legal and what is not...!!!

understandable, well that shouldnt be to difficult. ive seen a couple d15z1s floating around craigslist/ebay. the biggest problem is getting a real d15z1 transmission, but a dx tranny lol.
