Default 95 civic idle problem

95 civic ex
d16a
stock tranny

ok i have replaced the iacv and the fitv
still doing the same thing...
the rpms drop and the car dies
if i controle the speed of the rpm drop it's good MOST of the time
i have a 10lb fly and action 2md clutch
the fly is old as hell 4+years
the clutch is 2-3years old
thought that might be the problem because I'm getting a LOT of chatter when the clutch is released...
however it does it in nuteral as well... (not the chatter but the car dieing...)
fuel pressure is good, marchel fule pressure gauge mounted on top of filter.
new plugs, wires, cap, and button (within the last 6-8 months)
i do have a bosch o2 sensor on it now and i have heard bad thing about them
but it was on the car for 3-4 months prior...
bad gas?
i had 1/4 tank
filled it up with 93
and same thing

i did notice the hood is hotter than normal
i don't have a temp gun...
the temp. gauge is reading normal...

no vacume leaks

I'm pulling my hair out on this one
moveing on the 15th of nov
and gotta have this thing running

Is the PCV valve clogged?

Have you tried adjusting the idle screw on the throttle body?

Any CEL codes?

i thought about that but didn't have a flat head thin enough
pcv is 6-8 months old (done with ignition tune up)
no CEL codes
i drove it today around the block after installing the FITV
just to see if it would throw a code...
died on me about 15 times and no codes
i will go and see if i can find something to adjust that screw with (McGyver to the rescue ha ha)
but when it idles, sometimes for 20-30 min., it's at 800-900 rpms
whenever i release the clutch in neutral it chatters fairly bad
and the rpms jump to 1500 +/-
i know the clutch and flywheel are due, but is that related?
thanks for all the help

it needs a clutch soon and a flywheel even sooner
but i don't think it's related because it will do it in eather case
in nuteral if i rev the car it's like it can't resist the rpm drop ,they drop to low, it dies
and that's in eather case clutch in or out...
still haven't adjusted idle screw, it was raining and now it's dark
but when it idles it's at 800-900 so do i still need to adjust it?
it gets worse as it warms up it seams...
but will do it regardless of temp.

Idle adjustments are done only with a warm engine. Depending on the engine, there are specific procedures for adjusting the idle speed. Look up the proper procedure for your engine. You also really need an accurate tach to set the idle speed. My Civics are both OBDII, so I use a scan tool.

looks like i'm going to be pulling the throttle to check the ports...
thanks for all the help H-T

the idle is good 900rpms
it just can't resist the rpm drop and it dies

What about maf sensor? Try unplugging it if still no difference could be bad. Are you certain no vac leaks. Take brake clean and spray around all lines see if certain area kills it

I'm sure there is no vac leaks
Spray intake cleaner around/on/at everything and no rpm change
Still havn't checked the ports on the throttle but doubt that's it
They looked durty but not cloged when I replaced the iacv, fitv

Wouldn't the maf throw a code?
I will check it tomorrow

Closed on my house and move in 1 week...
Now it's a time crunch
Any help is welcome
Thanks again thus far

Update
Started it up
Warmed it up
Still happening

Checked the maf
Unpluged it and car died
So it's good...

Pulled the throttle and cleaned the ports
Durty but not cloged
Didn't help the problem...

I'm about to be forced to take it to the dealer
First time ever...
Man that would/will suck

Any more advice?
thanks everyone

I am not totally convinced it isnt the clutch. It almost sounds to me like the throwout bearing is really bad (hence the chatter) and the clutch could be trying to grab bogging the motor? Does the car try to roll or anything when in gear with the clutch pushed in? Like when it is bogging?

Also, have you checked fuel pressure? It could be a plugged fuel filter being that idle jumps up and then bogs again. Like the filter is plugging and the pump is just trying to push fuel through.....

Hope this helps.

Sounds like your clutch is giving you major issues. Change that sucker (since you need a new one anyways, right?) and if the problem goes away then you're gold, if it doesn't then you've eliminated one possibility and made it easier to diagnose.

it's not trying to role when in gear
regardless if that were the case
it wouldn't die when i'm doing 80 mph on the highway and push the clutch in... would it?
because of the motor speed would keep it from dieing if it were grabbing i would think
fuel pressure is good, marchel fule pressure gauge mounted on top of filter
and filter is 3-4 years old

I'm hours away from saying **** it and takeing it do the dealer
$120 for a diagnostic and go from there
this is going to be the first stump in 5 years so i can't bitch

thanks again everyone

What about the coil in the distributor? What if it's getting hot and overheating once the car is warm? How easy is it to start again when it first dies? Have you checked to see what the plugs look like?
And seems to me, you could test to see if the clutch is grabbing. Start in neutral, then before it dies, put it in first(clutch in), and see if the idle gets worse.

You might be on to something with the coil...
I took it to honda
And they refused to work on it due to the jdm motor
And other after market parts
But I dropped it off with a speed shop (mainstream performance)
That I have had previous experience with
$70 an hour and he's confident all he needs is an hour... we'll see

That sucks that you had to take it somewhere. Let us know what they find.

Well I got the call today
They went over everything and found no reason why it's doing this
Concluded that it's gotta be the clutch
So bye bye acion 2md and 10lb fly (it was overkill for now regardless)
And getting them to install a exidy stg 1 organic and stock fly...
Not happy about it but hey if it fixes it I don't give a damn

Thanks for all the help
Will let ya know how it turnes out in about 2 days

Well the car is ready.
He was able to save the flywheel
And it's fixed
He said it looked like eather the clutch was the wrong one
Or the guy that installed it didn't line it up right.
The pressure plate cracked and as a result the clutch was sitting crooked
So it's fixed... kick ***

I thought it sounded like the clutch to me! Glad the car is back in action!
