What do I look for to identify a gsr tranny? and the difference between the ls and gsr, I know that in the head, and the ecu I look for the P72 which indicates the gsr, what about the tranny?

Well, my 95 GSR tranny has Y80 on the barcode on the bellhousing. It's right by the engine ID plate.

I think most US GSR's had Y80's as trannys. Anyone else have any ideas?

there really is no way to tell from the out side, the s80 and y80 dont mean anything, yes i agree you would have to rip the tranny apart to figure it out.
i do know the way you can tell if the tranny has an lsd in it, pull the axles and innertimate shaft out of the tranny and look into the hole, if you see a bar across it, then it is a normal diff if there is nothing it is a LSD

 

run the vin on the tranny and see what car it shows up as belonging to.

 

also if the VIN is on the tranny that could help since the GSR came in the DC2(2 dorr) DB8 for GSR 4 door.. and the LS I believe was DC4(2 door) and DB7 for the 4 door LS models.. I need to verify this... now I have to look for my helms manual =P I do know that sohc tranny S20s do have VINs on there housing but I do not recall at this moment if the b series have the VIN on there housing

 

i believe there is a way.. put it in 3rd gear and spin the input shaft.. and count how much the differential turns. .and that should give you the gear ratio..

i know there is a number on there but i dont think it was the car vin number, but there may be a way of tracking it, maybe write it down and take it to a honda dealer? see what they can find?

Well how many teeth on GSR and how many on LS?
