Loud Squeal/whine when 5th gear is engaged
Alright, so the other day on the way to class i noticed when i shifted into 5th gear and released the cluch that a loud squeal/whine started. My car sit in my yard for 4 days while i was on vacation, my transmission fluid was very low. So what did i do to my car?
I searched and couldn't find the answer.

You asked what you did and I told you. Low fluid = trans gets very hot = its cooked.
Would you like me to lie and tell you nothing is wrong with it?

No, i would like an elaborated answer, as the one you just posted. It's only in 5th gear, and it still drives, shifts, the same just has the squeal/whine. Did i cook only 5th gear? or a bearing or what? I've been driving in since tuesday with the noise.
It just seemed that you were being a smart *** to me, i apologize. Thanks for your help.

I wasn't being a smart *** and generally aren't unless you ask for it. Just a short and to the point answer as I browse a lot of forums on top of running my business.
I'd have someone else do it as it seems you don't have the knowledge to do so and inspect everything (no offense). How far are you from Lexington or Knoxville? Either Bone or myself would be your closest options.

shaft end bearing is probly trashed. the whole thing needs to be cleaned out.
standards are very simple once you just sit down and look at it, but it is not something to do if you don't have access to tools/shop

Sorry again about the previous post, and i appreciate your advice and insight!
5th gear is pretty far from the oil galley, so low on oil can overheat the needle bearing for 5th gear on the mainshaft. OR, you have a chipped tooth on the gear causing whine...one or the other.
This was a 99 Civic Si....there was MAYBE 1 pint of MTF in the box. Customer drove on freeway for several minutes and it killed the 3rd gear. The needle bearing seized the gear to the collar, and the collar seized to the shaft. This trans got HOT...
I can't remove the collar with a vise and a sledge...

So it's in the shop, the guy is supposed to call me some time this week and let me come check out whats wrong with it.
275 for labor (Taking tanny out, spliting it, putting it back together and then putting it in)'
Still owe for parts, and labor to fix it. Still don't think it's a bad price?

Not at all....even at a cheap labor rate of say 50/hr, you're still a little over 5 hours labor into it, which is very reasonable, if not great. Make sure you dont get raped on parts!
Trans will have over 5 hours alone (not including removal/install) if the shop does it correctly.
Likely cheaper to just replace the trans, see my earlier posts for reference.

Anyone know of a place i could get a cheap Tranny if i need to go that route?
