1994 CIVIC VX hatchback NO Rear Speakers?
Quick question
I just got a EG hatch, but since its a VX im guessing it didn't come with rear side speakers?
What are the original size for the Rear speakers for Civic EG hatches.
The side rear speakers don't have a speaker bolt on mounting also, as well as holes for the plastic molding?
Is the mounting welded in place?

From what I remember, rear speakers were only a dealer installed accessory? Can someone confirm this?
I looked in the 92-95 Civic service manual and there was no instructions on rear speakers and it referred me to the accessory manual.

only si comes with speakers but there is metal brackets behind the center plastic piece so get some speakers and cut a hole in the plastic and whala u got some speakers in the back.
My DX came with speakers and a factory CD, but I'm almost certain it was a dealer-installed option. Yes, the rears are 5-1/4s. Do it right and buy the speaker brackets and speaker covers, don't just cut holes in the deletes. You'll have to hit HT Marketplace, Craigslist, or eBay though...the Honda dealers don't have these parts anymore. :/
The wiring exists in all 92-95 hatches, so no worries there.

rear speakers were an option for hatches.
they are 5 1/4 speakers, all though aftermarket speakers don't always fit perfectly.
the option add on kit parts can be had through marketplace on here or ebay. honda doesn't sell them anymore.

do what I did. find the speaker panels & zip tie some speakers to the panels. mine sounded fine & gave me no problems. but now I got that gathers speaker crap
My1995 VX didn't even come with a factory stereo. It had all the wiring to the door speakers and head unit but that was it. I also questioned about rear speakers but having nice door speakers was good enough. I would personally get nice 6 1/2 for the doors and leave it at that.
the si model did NOT come with rear speakers, when i got my car it only had i believe it was 5 1/4 in the doors and the tape player, currently now they are 6 in the front, 6 1/2 in the rear, custom made brackets bolted onto the metal support, and fungus was right though it all is pre wired, although i rewired everything, those little stock 16ga wires don handle much power if you plan on amping everthing
i was curious did the gathers speaker crap just bolt in. and sit flush with the usdm rear panels? i always wanted to know this before i bought some gathers rears

yes they bolt in no modification required and all hatchback as far as I'm concern the rear speaker wire are pre-wired and the speaker are optional @ honda dealer.

To clarify: In CDM & USDM, ONLY 94-95 Si Hatchbacks came with rear speakers as a factory-mounted standard feature. Check the parts diagrams to verify this. For all other hatchbacks, the rear speakers were available as an option in Black, Grey and even Blue.
thats awesome to see them fitted to the usdm panels. thanks for the pic and info. now just to decide whether i want to keep the cx bare bones or install rear speakers
Those curved Gathers panels are nice, but they're really rare. I tried to score a pair on eBay not too long ago, only to see it go over $300, much to my disappointment.
So I decided to just do a rear conversion and use the standard Gathers setup.
BTW, IIRC, the fronts allowed for 4" speakers and the rears allowed for 5-1/4". How did you all get bigger speakers in there?

^^ Ha-ha ... fair enough. I, however, don't like the trunk-box setup so much. I read your walk-through on it, though - thanks for that. I laughed at the part where you snuck down to the car 'when your wife was sleeping' to install the speaker panels.
I also scored my set of Gathers curved-style speakers for a very, very good price. Like you I wouldn't have dreamed of paying $300 for them ... not worth it.

I made my own cargo cover out of 1/4" plywood and put speakers on that. I loose a little functionality, but I have 6x9s and they sound pretty good... And, I am running my speakers through an amp and have ran heavy gauge speaker wire. It's a chore, but I didn't like the puny OEM wiring.
Great you got that setup at a good price. Honestly, if I had found a set of those, I wouldn't have gone for the Gathers conversion.
Yeah, that sneaking down to the garage is going to be a common thing from now on...we just had a baby, so my work time on my car is really limited these days. I'm amazed that I can get anything done at all.
Glad you like the writeup I'm doing on the Gathers interior. I'll be updating it this evening when I get the car back from the shop. I like the trunk box setup...it's perfect for my box of sockets/tools and a few other odds and ends. It keeps it from sliding around back and forth in my hatch and it keeps the tools out of site for the times I go to the junkyard. Plus I hear the trunk box doubles as an ice chest to store cold brews in.

Pretty much every piece of literature i've ever seen lists the size for the rear speakers at 5 1/4, but most of the ones i've seen used 6 1/2, however that said there aren't that many 6 1/2s that fit (Pioneer makes a shallow basket set that can be bought just about anywhere that fit fine)
does anyone know if the '94-'01 integra rear speaker mounting hardware will fit on the civic here? I know the grill won't obviously, but its the mounting hardware thats the hard part to find.
