My '94 Honda Civic EX (Ej1) overheats... HELP!
ok so the car doesnt over heat all the time.. first i thought it was just the coolant cause it was dirty.. so i flushed it and put 50/50. so it ran fine after 3 to 4 days, and the temp shot up outta nowhere while i was driving. i checked the radiator to see if it had ant coolant.. which it did.
so now i just added a lil bit of coolant and drove it again.. and same thing happen.. it drove fine for a couple of days until yesterday.. the car is overheating while driving! normal speed. 45mph how is this possible?
radiator fan seems to be working, no leaks from the water pump, smelled the exhaust and it smells normal. have this ever happen to any fellow ht member? anything would be appreciated. thank you in advance

I am having similar issues and I replaced the water pump the radiator and the thermostat. Now the fan only seems to click on sometimes. So I think I have a faulty fan switch. But on top of that I think the heater core is bad. Was driving up a hill yesterday and I heard the sound of running water behind the dash(1st time I have heard it). And now my wife tells me she has been having to fill up the resivoir every few days.
So what I would check if i was you would be that 1 the fan is working. Put it in drive and step on the break and gas at the same time to simulate going up a hill. This will put a big load on your engine and heat it up fast. Once its hot jump out and make sure that your fan is indeed working. If its is then I would look at your heater core. If you have been adding fluid then its been going somewhere and its probably your heater core.

on the water pump..if it was broken shoudnt it be leaking water? and i would see a puddle of water the next day under my car?
i might try to replace the radiator and all the hoses next.. =( sux!
any other suggestions? please!!!
Not always will a bad water pump leak out of the seep hole. It's 95% of the time a process of elimination in fixing wierd overheating problems. It's always better to start by replacing the cheapest parts first. The order should go, make sure there is no obvious leaks or swolen and/or soft hoses, make sure that coolant system is full and properly blead, replace thermostat, replace water pump, replace HG. So u go step by step until the problem is fixed and carfully inspect everything u take apart and replace along the way. I have only seen a radiator that wasn't damaged need to be replaced once in my whole life so I highly dought it is ur radiator unless it is damaged. That doesn't apply to highly modded cars tho because u need to upgrade the coolant system accordingly.
