Icon3 overheating issue.

okay so before I state what the problem is I HAVE CHECKED everything on here about it.

ive replace the thermostat and the seal.

ive flushed the radiator and put brand new fluid in it.

i replaced the radiator cap as well.

the fan wasn't working so i hard wired it.

i checked the trouble code and the only one im showing is a 12 which is the egr. (1 long flash and 2 short flashes.)

and the gauge still says that its overheating. not a little bit but the whole way across into the red.

any help is much appreciated.

thanks guys.

Make sure all of your grounds are clean and connected well. Since the gauge is electronic, a bad ground can give out a false reading.

i dont think its the water pump because the car is running cool.

like it was saying it was all the way in the red and i could actually grab the headers.

stupid move i know but i was pretty pissed lol.

and alright im gonna check all the grounds and get back to you.

but isnt there a sensor that could be out and cause this?

thanks man i just got done doing some research and i noticed it was running a little rich and the idle was acting weird so yeah all those symptoms point toward the ECT. I'm gonna go ahead and replace it and see how that works.

only thing i dont get is why it's not throwing the code if its bad.

Honestly, I haven't looked into this too far but there are 2 possibly applicable sensors on a GSR. The ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor and the TW (I think the engine water sender). I think one may control the gauge? I don't know but worth looking into.

Have you checked for any leaks from the lower or upper hoses?

I checked both hoses and theres a very tiny hole on the return hose from the water pump so im going to replace both hoses this friday and see if that fixes it. Unfortunately im probably going to end up replacing the whole damn cooling system, sensors and all, by the time i have this problem fixed.

Alright guys I've been researching like crazy and read a few things that have said that it might be my head gasket?

anyone ever have a problem like this from a screwed head gasket?

I'd like to hear a few opinions before i crack the **** apart.

Don't crack anything. Drain your engine oil and inspect it. Blown head gasket should result in milky oil.

Did you check to make sure there's no air bubbles in the cooling system?

A month ago I had a similar issue with my 99 civic "overheating issue". I replaced the thermostat, seal, radiator cap and fan switch. It seem like the my problem was fixed in my civic. But Im not sure if this is the same in your case.......

ok so i drained the oil and it was fine.

did an oil change an everything while i was at it.

so its still overheating all of the way into the red.

i checked the thermostat because a friend of mine changed it.

the gasket is screwed but would that cause it to overheat so bad?

i mean i drove it again today and its 45 degrees outside and before i got 2 miles down the road and it was all the way in the red.

any clues yet?

and i dont know if it matters with this but while changing the oil I checked the filter and it smelled like fuel?

How much have you spent so far?? Seems like youre in over your head. Any competent repair shop will do a cooling system diagnosis for you for about the price of the parts you have thrown at this problem...

well honestly this is stuff that needed to be replaced anyway. I havent flushed the radiator since i got the car and i havent changed the oil in 3 months. other than that I spend 8 bucks on a radiator cap and 20 bucks on a ECT and the thermostat was 16. So 42 bucks? And theres also the fact that I dont trust any shops around my town with my car. Ive had plenty of bad experiance with everywhere around my house.
