Default stock ride vs. lowered

not sure if there has been any discussion on this but I can't decide if I want to put coil overs on my car. just wanted to hear some opinions from anyone who's
ran stock and lowered R's. I drive in the city mostly but I plan on getting to the track next season

wow! is your car stock height? if it is then you will need coilovers. especially if you're going to track it! and sway bars and some lca's wouldnt hurt either.

Stock height is always better then throwing some cheap bullshit coilover suspension on. I'd get a decent strut/spring suspension setup if you plan on bringing the car to the track.

Worst advice EVER.

Stock ITR suspension is plenty capable for track use. OP do not change anything. Go learn to drive first. Moids come later after you learn your car and it will dictate to you what it needs at that time. Remember to take baby steps. Its all to easy to ruin an ITR's well balanced set up than it is to improve it.

x2

Most important thing to do when upgrading your suspension is RESEARCH first then buy, if not you'll end up taking someone's (ahem 92teg) advice and do something like buying a 22mm swaybar for your ITR, and take off your stock 22mm swaybar to put it on.

Big ditto on taking it slow. The stock suspension is not the stiffest/most responsive for racing, but the balance is basically perfect - and that is more important. If you run it in stock form long enough to understand this balance, then you can use it as a reference point if you do change anything later. Word of warning however - unlike 'regular' front-drive cars, this one is quite easy to screw up in the handling department...

I autocrossed stock for 3 yrs, then messed around with suspension changes for about 2 yrs and am now back to stock... It's a vicious circle that many have been through...

I'm running stock ride height, comptech rear sway and Skunk2 lower ti. I cannot imagine it handling any better with coilovers.

OP, if you are going to do c/overs in the future, PLEASE spend the cash and get Teins, Omni Power, PIC,...the list goes on. Years ago I had a set of Skunk2 c/overs on stock shocks and it was horrible! Been there, done that, moved on.

also in for baby steps..

if you've never tracked before, then drive the car stock, as is. you'll eventually learn and feel how the car reacts to your movements. then you have 2 choices, either change your driving style to coordinate with cars current setup, or modify specific areas of the car to better suit your driving style.

either way, you'll need a point of reference first. how will you know the mod made a difference if you havent seen the "before" first?

sounds like good advice. thanks for the input. I'll keep it stock for now and see what happens next season when I track it. If I do modify, it wont be with cheap parts

I disagree
I recommend upgrading your stock dampers to Bilstein HD.
The stock balance still remains the same but everything is alot more responsive. i feel stock suspension could use just abit more dampening. I set them on the middle perch for a .50 in drop. There is still plenty of suspension travel and ride height for daily driving. Ride comfort was not affected at all.Steering response is much improved and the car takes less time to take its set in corners and settle during undulations.

Stock Springs + Bilstein HD gets my vote. its a no loose mod for daily driving.

from personal use with springs and coilovers.

i would not go with springs because then you are going to need shocks to most likely compensate for the drop so it will put you close to the price of a good coilover setup. springs $200, shocks another $300-$400.

i got a PIC setup and it cost $750 shipped i believe. others can vouch for me that PIC are good coilovers....
