Searching for ways to reduce exhaust noise. EG2 Suggestions?
I have a EG2, stock internals, with a DC sports header, straight pipe, Monza 2.25" exhaust with resonator. I also have a cutout little bit after where the Cat would be. I was thinking of having some stock exhaust and muffler welded unto my exhaust right after the cutout, so I can have access to my WHP whenever I want. Anyways, would that sound too horrible? Does anyone else have any ideas? My 2 main goals is, saving money ( not planning on buying super expensive stuff, no need), and keeping my cutout. Any (logical) suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced!
your cut out is what is making the noise... So if you insist on keeping it then you can't win... you coul get an electric cut out... but you said you don't really wanna spend any money... http://inlinefour.com/dmhpeelexcuk.html but even then i'm not sure how quiet it will be
Forgot to specify, the cutout opens and closes, I'm looking for an " as quiet as possible " sound from when my cutout is on the closed position and my exhaust is flowing through the entire piping.
just use a reducer at the end of your exhaust and weld a oem one from a local parts store on it. that will save you from having to get new pipe from the cutout back and it will be stock quiet. its not the size of your pipe that makes it loud i would assume you have a "straight through" muffler not a "chambered" one. its like 50$ from my parts store for a oem replacement one.
i did that on my ej1. it was cat 2 1/4 no resonator to stock muffler and it sounded like stock. couldnt even hear it at all. but you will loose performance when your cutout is closed.

put the cutout right after the header and have a full stock exhaust after that. then you will have stock sound when you need it and free flow exhaust at the track
Ok so I get an original Honda stock muffler. .. is there any difference from B Series stock mufflers and D series? Will it sound fartcan-ishly? Or just plain stock? I don't have a cat. . .
Anyways
Thanks for the replies! :D

there isnt b or d series mufflers. it all car specific. also if its a stock muffler no matter what piping you have whether it be 1 inch or 3 inch as long as you dont have leaks it will sound stock.
just go to your local parts store and ask for a muffler for your car. im assuming you own a 1999 civic si. so thats what you need to tell them. they will ask you what motor and what trim but none of that really matters cause mufflers are made to fit the body not the motor.
for example a muffler off a 1999 civic si would fit on a 1999 civic dx. motor doesnt matter.

Thats the thing, I own a 94 del Sol, so it's pretty rare to find specific del Sol parts around here, specially mine that is an EG2 ( OEM B16A3). Anyways, what I've heard from not so trustworthy sources is that a muffler would be smaller if it where for a smaller engine, etc, catch my drift? That I shouldn't for example get the stock muffler for a 1.5 nonvtec into my B16 del Sol even if it DID fit. Anyways, so all stock mufflers are pretty much internally the same? And will have the same quieting effect on my vehicle? All I need is to find a stock muffler that fits and thats that?? :D thanks for all your replies guys!
since you have a cutout how much performace are you looking for when your dding it anyways? to be honest im not sure if they made 2 different exhaust sizes for the sol. an easy way to find out would be call your local parts store and see if their part numbers match or even online or something. if the part numbers match then they are the same muffler size if they dont they arent. BUT either way you BEST option is to go to your local parts store and buy one from there. mine has oem replacements for around 50$ new. then just have a muffler shop make a reducer from your pipe to fit the smaller muffler and bam its silent till you use your cutout.
another way would be to buy a "twin loop" muffler. you get performance like a straight through but not the noise. OBX's is around 100$. prolly the cheapest brand i would go with for that.

Ok guys. Bought and installed an OEM muffler shop replacement, and it really helped a lot. It's obviously not STOCK quiet, but there's none of that " gets much louder around certain RPM's" or, " metal grinding sound around certain other rpm's"
It's like. . . a stock car with more of BASS in the exhaust haha. But other than that, you can keep rolling up on the revs while in gear, and it won't get louder and louder, it stays pretty quiet, vtec engagement is barely noticeable, and performance SUCK! hahaha. but anyways, when i open up the cutout, hell breaks loose
I'm a satisfied H-T'er after following your advice guys, Thanks a lot!!!
P.S. If you gas it gently, it is VERY quiet. People can't tell I'm close by anymore!
