Default I have what appears to be 2 small hairline cracks in one of my sleeves.

A while back I thought I spun a rod bearing, so I pulled my engine and finally tore it apart. All I've found is two small lines on one of the iron sleeves (aluminum part looks fine) that mate up to two ~1/16" marks on the head gasket.

Anyone think this is something besides a cracked sleeve? Is it possible to mill or weld and machine this out? Or will I be sending my block off to Darton or GE?

I'll get pictures if anyone wants to see.

By the way, I pulled forged 81.5mm pistons and Eagle GSR rods out of this engine I initially thought was stock. If interested, they're listed in my for sale thread, along with a couple sets of head studs.

it all depends but i doubt a crack is going to be fixable if in the cylinder, maybe a scratch could be machined out post up a picture of what your dealing with for better info

I'll post pictures when I get home in a couple hours.
It's not possible to grind part of the cylinder away and fill it with weld? It appears that the crack was above where the top piston ring rode. I'm just not fond of having to resleeve a block I'm using for NA.

I don't want to sleeve it because that's expensive. Eventually I would, so I could go 84mm bore, but money is tight right now. Cooling I'm not too concerned with, I can always get a radiator from a DA for probably next to nothing.

There's a hairline crack through the sleeve in two spots towards the front of the block. If you look at the cylinder wall from the back of the block, the cracks appear to go down about 2mm, or about 1/8in.

The pictures do stink, but I'm having issues with my camera.

Here, I pointed out where the cracks are.

The second picture shows the places on the head gasket that laid against the cracks. The black stuff is missing and there are lines.

The engine started making a banging sound when it was running before it died, and this is the ONLY thing I can find wrong with it. The bearings all looked smooth. The pistons are in great shape, etc.

A machine shop should be able to do a dye penetrant test and tell you for sure. But for the cost of that, you can prob just go buy a good used block...
Or.......Might be time for a fullblown sleeved, deckplated, bored stroker build!

I'd like to sleeve it and go 84mm, but I dont' have the money. I'm selling parts to help funk the rebuild, but it's slow going.

Anyone know of a bare GSR for sale, that isn't like $1k?
