Default 94 Civic Speedometer issue

I have a 94 Civic cx hatch back with manual transmission. 300,000 Km

My speedometer has been acting up.

I will be driving along doing 60 km/h and then from time to time the needle will jump around. Sometimes it will go back to the speed I was doing i.e. 60 km/h but other time is will drop to zero.

It will then stay at zero for a random amount of time, finally going back to the speed I had been doing.

Also, sometimes while at zero I could push and hold the trip counter reset button, and while pressed down it would start to read the current speed.

I checked the VSS connector and it looked corrosion free for the most part.

I also came across posts about a bundle of wires that runs under the air intake which would some times rub causing a short, but that also looks fine.

Any ideas?

Paul
