bad tranny?
hey everyone... im new here. names ethan. i took over my buddy's account cuz he sold his 01 civic. i have an 02 ex and was curious. when i drive my car on regular acceleration and when i down shift there is mad rattling going on. also when i step on the clutch the rattling goes away but i here a hissing sound as if something is spinning. it slowly stops. my question is if my tranny is going out?
Could be a bearing or several bearings in the transmission that are worn out. Could maybe be your pilot bearing too. Check the fluid level in your transmission, I killed a tranny by running it with about 1/2 full of oil for an extended period of time :\. Sounded like there was a fist full of gravel inside there.
If your problem is the throw out bearing then your transmission would make noise mostly only when the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor. And if that is the only problem, it would be fixed by installing a clutch kit, assuming it comes with a new throw out bearing (which they do).
To check the fluid level you need to remove the fill plug on the transmission, its on the passenger side of the car behind the wheel. It requires a 1/2 inch drive to remove it. If a little bit of oil starts flowing out when you take the plug off you should be fine, but if it only drips out a little bit then stops quickly, it might be low. Only way to be positive its full is to try filling it more until it flows back out the hole.
This should help explain more and aid in your diagnosis. http://www.civicforums.com/forums/36...save-some.html
This is an image of where your fill plug should be. (The closest round thing with a square in the middle)
