did they tell you it would work, or that you shouldn't use it? did the guy give any adverse side effects or anything?
regular green stuff will work and it works fine for many people with the same engine. it's recommended by honda (the guy you talked to, likewise) to only use honda coolant. i don't know what's different about it, other than color... but i imagine they'd say something about better seal protection, more specific corrosion prevention, "formulated for hondas..."

Considering the preponderance of aluminum engines out there, all commercial antifreeze's will work.
Unless you're talking about stuff that's been sitting in your garage for 20 years, you should be all right.
