thumping sound after installing new clutch and front axles
I have a 99 Integra LS. I recently got a new Exedy stage 1 clutch installed on my car by my friend who used to be a mechanic at Honda. About 300 miles into breaking in my clutch, I also had to get my front driver and passenger side axles replaced. So my friend replaced those as well.
A couple of days later, I began hearing a thumping sound coming from the front passenger side of the car whenever I let go of the gas. When I accelerate and have my foot on the gas, it is fine. However, as soon as I let go of the gas at around 30-40 miles an hour, that's when I would start hearing the thumping. Also, the car also only makes the sound when the car is in gear andI let go of the gas. If I let go of the gas and put it in neutral and let the car just roll, it doesn't make the thumping sound.
I told my friend and he took a look at it and we drove it around the neighborhood for a few minutes so he could hear. Afterwards, we went back home and he inspected what might be wrong but couldn't find anything. He added more transmission fluid, which made the sound go away for a day before it came back again.
Anyone have any ideas? Thank you for any input. It is very much appreciated!!

bumpp... cud the thumping sound be from a bad axle install? the sound is coming somewhere from the front passenger side wheel. also, the thumping sound started to happen after the axle was replaced
what kind of axles did he put in?

To be honest, I'm not sure what brand the axles were. I know they were remanufactured though. I also noticed the sound comes out more when I have a passenger with me. Last night, I drove around (city and highway) by myself and heard no sound. When my girlfriend or whoever rides with me, the thumping sound happens. Perhaps the extra weight on the passenger side makes the sound more prevalent? But why?
Thanks for the link and the feedback follie gatts. I read the whole thread and sounds like I have a similar problem. Mine however, doesn't vibrate. It just makes the thumping sound.

when there is more weight, your suspension compresses more. this changes the angle at which the joints in your axle rotate. if you have a bad axle, then the sound would likely change with suspension load. talk to your friend. if you have crappy axles, you are probably going to end up swapping it out again.
will check that too!! thanks!!
So we replaced the axle with a new remanufactured one and now it's perfect again. We must have gotten a bad one before.
