Default d15b2 piston rings?.. help!

There's proballư already a thread about this. But I couldn't find the details I needed.sorry.

So. Got a sedan a while back for cheap. Guy I got it from said the piston rings were fried. Because it was smoking white smoke really bad. That's when it would run. Now when I try to start it. It shakes like it wants to turn over but dosent completly start. Rpm needle just shakes below 1k and 0 but dosent fully start.

Is that because piston rings? I was thinking a head gasket could be part of the problem.

And if I change rings can I do it myself without having to send it to a shop? Seeing that I don't have the time or money.

Thanks ahead of time.
Sorry if I'm thread jacking.

So wouldn't be piston rings?

Could the headgasket be why it won't turn over completly?

your best bet since the engine is still in the car is to do a compression test.

Actually. I started taking the head off today. Stopped because it started raining. Just need to take off the header and intake mani.

I'm hoping its just a head gasket.

Why dont you just rip the head off first, your going to have to anyways if the rings ARE bad.. Check the head gasket.. If thats bad. Proceed with the past knowledge and replace the piston rings. Dont forget to get new crank bearings are whatnot also.

Welp. Took the head off.
Gasket didn't look blown. Just stressed and squished.

There was like a 1/4th inch deep of antifreeze in all of the cylinders over top my pistons.

Which my rings are probally ****ed because can't build compression with water or antifreeze. And I tried starting it numerous times before I ripped it apart.

oh you will get compression going on with water/coolant in the cylinder walls. how do you think hydrolocking occurs lol. i'm still not so sure i'd say your rings are bad.. but since its apart now it's kind of hard to check the compression. if you have all the parts though then by all means swap out the rings, bearings, etc.

So. Ripped the head off. About a 1/4th inch of antifreeze in my cylinders over top of each piston.

Head gasket was super smasshed and whoever put it on didn't use any sort of gasket seal which I though would of been there.

Well. I replaced the head gasket and put everything back together. It turns over the same way. Shakes like it wants to start. But won't turn over completly.. I'm stumped.

I'm gonna do a compression test saturday. And check all that. And if the rings are fine and compression is how its suppose to be. It'll have to be something with my dizzy and plugs wire. Ahhh!

What's the compression numbers for a b2?

you might have a timing problem. did you set the motor to TDC before taking the head off. also make sure your spark plug wires are in the correct order.

Yeah. Timing is fine. Even marked everything. And the firing order is fine. Checked all that. And put new plugs in it after I put the head back on.. And its acting the same way it did before.

instead of doing a rebuild, buy a direct replacement motor. they're easy to come by, and the swap is just as easy.

I know. But if I swap it. I wanna ls swap or. Or maybe even a simple Z6 or y8. I'm just trying to make this motor run for the time being because my other car is about dead.
