CEL problem with jdm GSR in 99 EM1
OK so i bought an EM1 back in June, its got a jdm gsr running on a conversion harness to obd1 usdm gsr ECU. Runs good, no problems what so ever its a nice moto
Tonight i took it to the track for the first time. the first time i've ran it real hard since i bought it.
When i get to the end of 3rd gear (around 7800rpm) the check engine light comes up every time. The car goes into safe mode and hits the limiter until i turn the car off. Its code 22. vtec oil pressure. My friend said its because im running a US ECu on a Jap motor.
Is there anything i can do to fix this? or do i have to run a chipped ECU? any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

well it comes on at 7800 and will stay on. i turn the car off and check the code its 22. i read its something to do with the JDM GSR not having the oil pressure switch but the ECU is still looking for it. by safe mode i mean there is no vtec and an early rev limit (around 6500 rpm) until i turn the car off and turn it back on, clearing the code.
VTPS FIX: Take the power wire for the VTPS and splice it into the VTS wire, then take the VTPS ground wire and ground it to the actual body of the VTEC Solenoid - that's it! If done correctly, your ecu will not throw a check engine light for code 22 (VTPS). If you wind up using a JDM OBD2 ecu, you do not need to perform this VTPS fix, because the JDM OBD2 ecu doesn't look for a VTPS.

does that sound like a fix to the problem?

Yea i think i remeber reading this along time ago. i knew it was something to do with crossing the wires over. ill give it a go in the morning and see what happeneds.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Since the ecu is obd1, chip the ecu to run crome and disable the vtec oil pressure switch. If it was me personally, i would chip to run crome and disable the vtec oil pressure switch. The other option is if you have a usdm vtec spool valve from any b-series vtec engine, you can swap it in. That will solve your problem too.

Alright so heres what i found out this morning:
I have a JDM b18c, but it looks like the guy before me put a USDM vtec oil pressure sensor on the motor, but left it unplugged with a paperclip in the plug, i guess to bypass the sensor.
So i plugged it to the sensor and started the car, I get a code 22 right away.
OK so the next step i take is what nicefighter said: i disconnect the batt, disconnect the sensor and run a wire from the power of the solenoid to the power of the oil pressure sensor. go for a quick drive, and i have no vtec, with a check engine light coming on around 6k rpms, and an early redline at 6500. This time the code is 21, vtec sensor.
so now im stumped, i put it all back how it was when i got the car, still does the original problem. any ideas?

Sounds like a bad oil pressure sensor. Try switching the sensor with a known working one. The oil pressure sensors are the same as the d16z6 and d16y8 as well.
not to start up a dead thread but i can start my own cuz this stupid trial period but anyway im having a similar problem, i have a 99 ej8 with a 96 b18c1 and running a stock obd1 p72 with a jumper harness my idel is erratic bounces from 1000 to 2200rpm and it rev limits at 6500, but running the stock p2p from the ex it runs as if it were the y8 motor w/o a ckf trick. vtec at 5500 and rev limit at 7200 like the y8
