After 3 years of owning my '92 civic, i just discovered that the rear quarter panel has been patched. i wouldn't even know if my car hadn't been stolen. My insurance sent me the copy of the carfax and it shows that it's been hit somewhere on the side. since i'm missing the rear seats i decided to take out the back panel and take a look on the right side. and there it is, i saw a shoe box size black sticky tape, taped on the inner body panel. does anyone know what that thing is for? they did a pretty good job on the outside though. it kind of bothers me, i know, my car is almost twenty years old. nothing is perfect. can some of you shed some light on this? would it bother you?
im one of those people that even if a car has been hit and fixed properly , i still cant accept it. it will always be in the back of my mind even if nothing is wrong with the car wat so ever i'll never be happy again
usually it should be black paint, or something similar to truck bed liner on the backside of your panel. for corrosion protection... if its tape, i dont know what to tell ya

Depends....When I look at my car I know that everything from the rear bumper up to the front fenders is perfect (9.5/10) and done properly so Im happy with it but my front bumper is chipped to ****. As long as its something that can be unbolted, repaired, and replaced I have no problem with it. When it comes to the 1/4 panels, engine bay, trunk area, I need it to be mint and I hate when theres damage in those areas.
Even so, as long as something IS repairable (even if it has to go to a shop to get done right) it wont bother me, but I would ahve to get it fixed.

i cant stand it....i feel as if everyone is looking at the imperfections. im sure everyone (we enthusiasts) knows where every little scratch or ding is on their car, no matter how small
It would probably bother me a little if I found it it had previous body work, but not as much as current issues.
Right now my sedan has a dent in the passenger fender, and both bumpers are unaligned. It bothers the hell out of me, but to fix the dent is over $500 and I haven't looked into whats wrong with the bumpers.

It bothers me a lot. Especially after a nice wash and wax that makes all the imperfections stand out. Small scratches on the doors, chips all over the front bumber, dents, faded trim moldings, horrible water spots, cracked windshield. Worst part is I have to look at a huge dent on my trunk lid where the paint is now chipping off, plus the one on top of the car right above the rear window lol (A party got outta control and a guy starting hitting cars with a metal bat). Then there's the bumper damage left over from the last owner when she backed into a wall, sucks cause everyone thinks that's my screw up and I gotta explain that the damage isn't from me.
Good thing is I had a guy offer to fix both dents for $125 each, saw some pictures of his other work and they looked really good. Plus I repainted my badly faded trim moldings not long ago, look completely OEM with a nice black finish and not glossy at all. Dupli-Color Trim Paint ftw

used to drive me nuts, i've sold cars for that reason. but then i realized how FREAKIN HARD it is to find one that's unmolested in some capacity... now i just make sure it gets fixed to my liking.
If there was a patch panel, that tape could be covering up the seam on the panel, if thats the case, its there to keep any of the elements out of the seam to keep it from rusting over time. Almost like a seal.
