Is the CEL on?

What color is the spark?

I think the backfiring hints that the mechanical timing is off by a tooth or two:

Is the pointer on the lower timing belt cover aligned with the lone white TDC1 mark or one of the marks in the group of three?

Spark should be bright white with only a slightly blue tint.

Is the CEL on?

have you ever had the o2s hooked up? You need atleast one hooked up, from past experience with no starts. So your running a p28 with obd2 to obd1 conversion harness?

Well you can jump the service connector to see what the CEL's are. But you are right, CKP & O2 wont make the car not start. Is your Main Relay Clicking? Is the fuel pump Priming? It could be that your Grounds are not connected properly. Is the Ground on the Thermostat housing?

my money is on your timing being a tooth or so off. i have seen this happen numerous times. It's even happened to me where i looked set the timing dead **** on, rechecked it and it was off.

yep it happened to me. When my friends helped me put my motor in the first time. They were idiots. They didnt put timing on right and they ****ed up half the sensors. Then they called their friend who actually knew **** who came and put the timing on right. The head was all the way on retarded. So I told them not to come back and now I do all the work with my dad only.

my best bet would be to check for the codes, if you don't have a scan tool just jump it by using a wire, there should be a little plug by the lower pass side harness, kinda hard to explain with no picture. See what the codes are first, if they relate to anything that may cause it to not start. Then you can go from there.

First rotate the crank pulley a few revolutions counterclockwise to precisely bring both the cam and crank to TDC1. Post clear photos of the cam and crank at this position.
