Default Dual Build: Del Sol Turbo, MR2 Turbo.

Hey everyone,

Doubt anyone remembers me or my car... but after letting the Del Sol rot away in the weather undriven & not taken care of, I've decided to give it a new life.

This could be a slow project, as I've dumped thousands into the MR2 recently, and not a dime to the Del Sol, but they're both amost at the same point & i'll be simultaneously finishing them both up w/ similar work.

Current Setup:
JE Pistons
Eagle Rods
ACL Bearings
ARP Headstuds
Cluth (Can't remember what I have... I'll have to check receipts)
Flywheel (Again... Can't remember haha)
Hottanked, Honed, crank balanced & micropolished, Block & Girdle notched for rods. Stock head.
Garrett T3 .60/.63
HKS SSQBOV
Tial Wastegate
CCFab Manifold
Ebay Intercooler
DSM Blue Tops
Innovative LC1 Wideband
Self chipped ECU
Ostrich realtime emulator
Crome Pro

Random Pics:

It's current stance:

now for the mr2!

500$ for:

Already on it:
Upgraded turbo (I gota check what size/kind it is... I didn't buy it so I don't know. Kid before me blew it up cause he had no way to tune it and ran stupid amounts of boost).
Greddy IC (Not installed, new inside car)
Random springs (They're purple... Awaiting my Tein setup)
3" Straightpipe exhaust
Aftermarket BOV (Not sure which kind... It's in the pic. I got another HKS one though...)
Tial Wastegate

Giving the car a look I want:
OEM Spoiler
OEM Headlights
OEM Amber Corner lenses
OEM turbo foglights
OEM turbo trunklid
94+ Taillights
New aftermarket front lip
Gracer sideskirts (To hide the fugly crap under the stock side skirts)
Carbon fiber real lip/diffusers

Time to rebuild the bottom end!

I'll be updating this thread w/ progress as time goes.

The 3000gt is also mine, but it's a POS! lol...

I'm painting both cars white and going w/ bronze rims. The Del Sol will keep the slips on it, but I'm going to powdercoat em. My dad decided it was a good idea to tie the car down w/ chains around the rims... I'm sure you all know the outcome! So I need to sand em down & fix any scratches & all on em, then I'll do some research on paint for em, get it in & paint em at my shop.

I want them to almost be twins... Brother from another mother! haha.

Del sol is pretty much all stock look, cept it's slammed w/ the front lip. Spoiler is being taken off & trunk lid shaved, I love the look of it a lot more. I've fiberglassed where the AUX lights went on the bumper, because I didn't want em any longer. I did more fiberglass work on the bumper opening to flow smoother & match intercooler better. Right now I'm debating on fiberglassing the lip & bumper together, but I'd like to make a mold of the lip before I do it.

The MR2 Is actually pretty stock itself look wise. I only threw side skirts on it because you can visibly see the jack points underneath the side skirts. It's a strip of metal & it gets all bent up and looks like crap. So the new side skirts actually hide it. It opens the rear vents into a single opening rather than a two vent look, so it looks more like the supra vents rather than something like a 3000gt if anyone knows what I mean. Sucks cause I have 2 sets of modified vents for the mr2 I gota sell now. Oh well. It came w/ ugly flush mount headlights, I since threw them in the trash and put OEM stock pop up ones on. I ditched all the clear **** and went all OEM Amber all the way around.

haha exact same thing I did!

I'm aiming for roughly 12-15psi on it for now. Building the bottom end fully but not over boring or stroking it. The head is staying stock for now until I pick up another head and build it on the side. Waiting to find a good price on the AEM EMS as most of the other EMS' sucks for the MR2. I really love crome & the AEM EMS reminds me a lot of the crome that I run on the Del Sol. Sadly the AEM EMS is about $1500 compared to free crome, or ~300-400$ that I paid for the pro version.

I was stupid one day & quit my job. I was making real good money & it took me a bit to get back on my feet and all. I tried to sell the Sol but it was my brothers first car & I didn't wana let it go lol. I actually gave it to him for free a few months ago, but he don't want it now so it's mine again.

Right now the only thing slowing the project down is no garage. Both cars need a lot of work, and I need somewhere to paint them. I've been looking for garages for rent that allow me to work on them & all in my area, but haven't been having much luck :*(

The del sol has a new & improved home.

everything detachable has been takin off & cleaned up real good. I'm working on cleaning up the bay real good & getting it ready for paint. Was going to paint it white, but going to stick w/ the black I think.

Ordered a ton of piping for the exhaust & dump tube on the del sol.

mr2 has got new seats!

Ordered a brand new all aluminum radiator w/ slim fan for the del sol, walbro pump & looking for new injectors at a decent price. The blue tops were hitting high 90's duty cycle for quite some time.

I've decided to put the MR2 on hold until I finish the del sol because I think the del sol will be more reliable. So maybe we'll see this thing back on the streets w/ some new videos in a month or so!

I'll get up some progress pics as soon as I get my camera from work. I'll also post pics of my design software & laser cutting up some of my newely designed parts for it

lol nah I wish

I haven't been doing nothing since my gf broke up w/ me, so I figure what better way to make me happy then spending money on myself again! lol.

I have the mr2 motor torn apart & ready for assembly, but haven't touched it cause she was supposed to help me cause she wanted to learn more. lol oh well, it'll get done soon!

Thanks for interest people! I plan on posting a lot of information on some of the things I'll be doing in hopes of it being useful for others.

I didn't do no work today because I was working on my other car. I own a 3000gt also that I bought when I was 18. It became kinda unreliable and I didn't know how to work on cars then so I let it sit. I'm finally selling it to my father shortly, so I'm trying to work the bugs out on it! Here's a pic of it... He raised it up because he said it was too low... but gosh it was sexy slammed!!!

Well it was a great car tbh. I loved it. It was my first car & good investment because it built amazing credit paying it off.

The problem started comming home from work one day... A pipe came off a truck, went under my car and hit pretty hard. A day or so later the car stopped running right. (A month previously water pump went out, so I did that w/ timing belt... A month or so before that clutch went out... had to do that!). This was before I could work on my own car, labor hours sucked.

Well the pipe hit & messed something up, a shop told me it was alternator. So they put a new one on and it didn't fix nothing so I just got pissed and stored it.

It has a little over 60k miles on it only and I never dogged it cause I thought I had to shift before the red in the rpms, or else my motor would blow! (LOL).

When I learned how to work on cars I started tinkering w/ it. I had to reset timing cause I poked the timing belt and a cam gear jumped. Those cars have hydraulic tensioners, which loosen if they sit over long periods of time I believe. Upon doing so I noticed the crank pulled was broke. The car has a metal pulley w/ a layer of rubber in the middle of it I guess to dampen vibration? I duno what it's called, my hondas dont have it. Well it came unbound so the inner part spun at crank speed, while the outer slipped. This is why the car ran wack cause none of the accessories ran at full speed!

Hope that makes some sense! lol. I guess it was more so frusturating to maintain because I was not mechanically inclined at the time. I wish I knew how to work on cars back then, but I would have NEVER learned if it was not for my 1991 EF hatch I bought when I stored the mitsubishi

Yeah it's a N/A. I wish it was turbo it would be so much more fun lol.

It's an amazing car. So comfortable to sit in & drive. The engine isn't too hard to work on really no more, and I think I can pull the motor just as quick as my hondas probably. Just a bit bigger!

Just a lil progress...

Bottom end carnage on the 3SGTE motor (MR2). Cylinder walls were scored up pretty bad & a simple honing didn't help any. Also the crank had some unusual wear. I ended up buying a complete longblock for $100 locally (really lucked out). Ripped it apart the next day & dropped it off to get hot tanked & honed. From there I'm coating the walls up real good & bagging it for a bit until I finish the Del Sol! Doing a bit of work on the Honda again really made me remember why I love em so much.

Heres the last of the MR2 photos until I awake it from hibernation!

Piston #1:

piston #2

That is why I don't drive any of my cars w/ built motors without a full standalone & tune haha.

Crank:

The new Del Sol shelf!

Now for some Del Sol progress!

I put the S2000 seats in the Del Sol, just because I was curious... They look pretty damn good but the fitment on the sides is extremely tight. I'm going to really take a look at them, clearances & check if everything will function okay & I think I may just get another pair for both cars!

I pulled the motor finally! I'm working on stripping the valve cover now. I'm going to shave the lettering off of it & my brothers going to paint something crazy on it because I checked out the valve cover thread in the other forum & want something weird on it now haha.

Next I pulled most of the interior, dash, and right ride side of the heater/vent assembly. I needed to pull all my wiring through for the wire tuck. Some of the wires were not loomed & I want everything loomed, protected & actually ran as best as possible when I do the wiretuck.

I started to take everything out of the engine bay. The main focus point on this car will be in the bay. I did most all of the body work to the main body about 2 years ago & it's in pretty good shape minus the paint. But the bay needs a lot of work. Most of the bolts that held on bracketry & all snapped off while trying to just take the nuts off. I didn't really want to do it, but now I'm going to relocate all the brake lines & all to a different location which I'm still trying to decide on. I was thinking of putting the valves on the passanger side where the battery/fuse box was, and running the lines through where the wiper motor is, but I'm not sure there's room to do so. Either way I think if I end up mounting them back onto the firewall behind the motor, that it will end up looking cleaner no matter what.

Spent today scraping off all the seam sealer honda uses, and wire wheeling off any surface rust. The front core support was cut off & replaced when my brother wrecked the car, but of course it was done w/ junkyard parts so they're not in the best shape. I'm going to spend a lot of time getting everything to line up perfect (Mainly bumper/fenders where they meet). I've already got a real nice bracket that clamps them together & totally eliminates any chance of them poping out from being flush (where the bumper meets the fenders, under/by the corner lenses). I'll post up the CAD drawings & finished laser cut parts to them in a few days!

Tomorrow I may spend all day finishing on pulling the remaining brake lines & planning out how to run/mount everything before I start plugwelding holes, cutting off studs & shaving the bay! Hope this car turns out great. It sucks working on it by myself, and I keep thinking about half assing or taking shortcuts because of it, but then I think how much it'll be worth it in the end when the car is "perfect" & flawless to my eyes!

I think I have your del sols twin. lqtm I am doing a tuck on it as well and was wondering where you plan on putting the fuse box, I am considering just cleaning mine up and flipping it so you cannot see the wires because i want to at least be able to check the fuses on it easily, either way keep updates.
And here is a pic of your twin accept mine needs new paint.

haha that's awesome! Twins indeed!

I'm not exactly sure where to put mine either, but want it easily accessable also. I was thinking to the trunk w/ the battery, but I need to get another look at how many wires I need to run & how much room I have to play with.

I don't really use the trunk for anything at all but as storage for my ameripol top. So I was thinking battery & fusebox would go nice in there.

Ah good idea I will look at that as well, make a mount for the fuse box and battery to sit.
