cant here the vtec Engage, how to diagnose?
Before you start to flame. I really dont care to much about the sound. I just want to know if my vtec is engaging and working correctly. I just dropped in a JDM GSR in my 94 LS. Motor runs strong but I just don't hear that vtec engage sound at 5,5k. Dont get me wrong I still feel it pulling until 7,5k but I swear my friend and my self cannot hear any different tone or engagement. I use to have a b20vtec and it was night and day when I hit 5k rpm. I only have an AEM intake and a USDM computer. How do I diagnose.
Well I just came back from a spin around the block. I figured I try it with the cable to the vtec solenoid unplug. Immediately at start up the check engine lights come on. The butt dyno doesn't feel the pull after 5k rpm vs when the solenoid is plugged in. Don't hear the vtec engagement sound though. Oh well.
Vtec xover on a p72 is 4400 the secondaries open up at 5700. Vtec isnt as audible on the gsr intake manifold. If something was an issue a cel light would come up similar to when you unplugged it.
If your after the sound get a single plenum intake manifold ie skunk or blox and get it tuned via a chip or one of the many engine management systems out there. Otherwise continue enjoying a great motor.

back probe youre vtec signal wire and check if youre getting voltage while driving or just rev the eng. and battery voltage should be present. and check youre vtec oil pressure switch.

yeah i have the same problem. i just bought a used civic si with i/h/e and i don't hear the vtec engagement. it says b16a2 on the engine and it has the vtec button on the front of the engine. is because my greddy exhaust is too loud or what? can anyone please help me ? thanks
my bigest question is do yaw have stock exhaust?? another thing I have noticed is that when your driving around a area where theres alot of trees (freash air) I tend to hear vtec kick in hard how bout yaw try that i dunno maybe just me cause i got a Skunk2 IM with a stock p72 ECU dont flame me ima get me a chipped p28 soon

Why are you guys all putting in random bullshit that need not apply to the OP's situation. This guy said all that needs to be said^^^^
Your VTEC works, it's just quiet, if not silent.
Engages around 4,400 RPM in a stock GSR, and the Secondary Butterflies(IAB) open up around 5,700. If you want to hear vtec, like Slain said, get rid of that garbage gsr intake manifold, put a decent i/h/e/testpipe setup on there, and I guarantee you won't be complaining anymore. Really wanna hear it? Type R cams yooooooooooooooooooo0Oo

If you really want to hear VTEC and the IAB, get a ported GSR manifold, ITR cams and get it tuned. Also an after market exhaust and intake. I had this set-up for a year or so it's kind of cool to hear and feel both switch over. My dyno shows it to be seemless but you can still hear it. Fun fun.
Keep in mind the dyno plot is at WOT. VTEC can engage at all different points during your driving. Especially when the VTEC throttle percent is set at 50%, as in my case. And you can feel it at these NON-WOT times. My car is mildly modified and nowhere near stock. These conditions would never be felt on a stock car.
as long as you feel it pulling your good
i remember when i first got mine use to make an auidible difference untill i gave it a good tune up.
You will def. know if its working or not when you get into the upper RPM's
