A trick to help with timing belts or setting valves
When finding Top Dead Center on a particular cylinder when setting valves etc. I started putting a ping pong ball or golf ball over the spark plug hole. As you turn the crank with your wrench the ball will pop up a bit as it reaches the top of compression stroke. Then you can fine tune by using the marks on the camshaft or crankshaft.

0 (zero) pointer at the crank and cam base curve on both valves will get you TDC compression.
Then again, reading the manual before hand can save a lot of time too.........
