Default speedo problem plz help

so here is the deal i have a 95 hatch with a 5 speedtranny swap out of a 99 i think s40 is the trans code. so i was driving last night speedo worked and everything i pull into my driveway parked then decided to go down the road to the store. my speedo no longer worked. everything else was fine except my engine got a little warm because i have a small radiator leak and it ran a little low. where should i start? is the speedo going off the transmission speedo or does it use like a wheel speed sensor? im going to try and pull my speedo out and look at it today.

CEL codes?

Does the odometer continue to work?

The speedo and odometer get the speed signal from the VSS that sits atop the transmission.

If there's no CEL code 17, then the ECU seems to be getting the speed signal, suggesting that the VSS is working. You might want to jump the service connector to verify there's no code. The CEL works, right?

If the odometer works, then the problem is the speedo itself or the cluster. If neither works, then the problem may be a bad wire running between the VSS and cluster.

Does the CEL work -- on for 2 seconds and then off when key turned to ON(II)?

If the VSS is installed correctly as mentioned above, then the next step is to do some electrical troubleshooting. The VSS has three wires -- power, ground, and signal output to the ECU and cluster. Start by checking for battery voltage on the VSS power wire and continuity to ground on the VSS ground wire.
