what motor oil to use, mobil1 or vtec oil?
hi, honda fans, been driving vtec for almost 4 yrs now... own a b16..
im in a dilemma here,, i ve been using honda oem vtec lev oil, SL 15w 40, recently i open my valvecover to see some black sludge, then i switch to mobil1 super xhp, 15w 40.
My question is can i use mobil 1 15w 40, for my dohc vtec ( high rev) or do i have to switch back to my honda oem oil?
i live in a hot country in asia so im sticking with 15w 40. im concern with mobil 1 as i do not if its suitable for high rev engine, as i don wana wear my cams or rocker. im using s2 stage 1.
Does vtec needs special oil or any oil would do.
Any comments is appreciated. thanks

Are you changing your oil and spark plugs religiously at 1,000 miles?
IF not, that's your problem.
Seriously, just get some 10w30 full synthetic and you're fine.

"VTEC oil" is just a lower weight oil, it has nothing to do with VTEC and im surprised theyre calling it VTEC oil. haha
Stick with whatever oil you please, VTEC oil will not make your VTEC crack harder haha.

I use 5w30 Mobil 1. But, I own a D16y8 with 200k on it already. Runs so much smoother than regular or synthetic blend. However, it was straight black after 5k.
OP
IMO 40w should be fine if it's as hot as you say. You can use a 5w40 if you'd like. The 5 is the weight when the oil is cold. It help's it to flow better when the engine is cold on start up.
I'm not a big fan of synthetic oil's. I am a big fan of regular oil changes.
I use 10w30 in my turboed Subaru (112,000 miles) during the Summer and 5w30 during the Winter. I use whatever oil is on sale Mobil 5000, Pennzoil, Shell, Texaco, etc

by the time these douchebags are on their flying cars you will still be rolling on your b16 car
yeah!!!! bitchezzz
you should be fine running mobil 1 15w40, what I would do is run it 4500-5000km then change it and after about two or three of those quick oil changes you should be fine then you can go back to your normal km intervals. The honda 15w40 oil is a semi-synthetic where the mobil 1 is fully synthetic which shouldn't sludge up your b16.
as stated the op said he lives in asia which depends on the part they live in but it does get extremely hot over there.

dont change your plugs at 1k there is no point, they are still new,
changing your oil at 1k for a street car and full synthetic is a waste.
if you do any of this your throwing your money in the trash.
op be carfull with full synthetic, every time i have put it in my cars, i have noticed it burns alot quicker, i stick to castrol 5-30 or 10-30 synthetic blend.
you should be fine with 10w40.
